How is the water level ? Is it halfway up the skimmer ? Too low and it might just keep.the door down. Too high and it might not let it fall at all.

Check that the foam that makes the door float is intact on the upper inside of the door. Maybe you lost yours and that's why the water flow overpowers the door when the pump runs.

The foam is there and looks good. The door never flopped around last year either...seems the pump pulls too strong and the water just keeps the door held open. I'll try to get a quick video at some point today.
