Another day, another SLAM

How annoying!!! Could algae be back? I went out to hang some CYA today and I see more dead algae on the floor of the pool! I had let the chlorine start to drift down, but tonight I'm having hubby bring it back up to 16. Will this SLAM never end???!?!!!
You might want to check if the algae you are battling might be mustard algae.
One of it trademarks is the fact that it would disapear at SLAM level but comes back as FC start to drift down.
If you haven't already check this guide - Mustard Algae

Started SLAMming for mustard algae today. I consider my previous SLAM to have never really ended, so brought FC up to 16 for a day, then brought it up to 24 this morning. We've checked it every couple of hours today to keep it as close to 24 as possible. I tend to get the wanders at night, so I'll check it at least twice overnight and dose as necessary. All the tools and bits are in the pool, soaking in the 24 ppm FC water. Washed my bathing suit. Can't think of anything left to do.

I think the culprit is the old oak tree in the front yard. You'd think it was far enough away to not affect the pool, but noooooo, it's right there dropping baby acorns in -- the seed pods I was complaining about -- not to mention lichen off the limbs. Lichen, which is of course ALGAE and FUNGUS mixed together! I think if we took out a strategic limb or two our troubles would be over, but if course that costs $$$. Maybe next year. Or maybe next year we'll move the pool to the other side of the house altogether.

Hmmmm....

Ha! Hardly anyone can afford to live on their own around here. Housing in Portland is scarce and at a premium price. My 21yo rents a room from a friend of ours, but only because after I sold the house I rented another house with only enough bedrooms for me and the two younger kids, so he got the boot. The 19yo has been my only real helper with my parent's house and the move (and then he did most of the work for the pool), so I haven't insisted he pay rent, but his free rent time is about up.

I am not sure he'll ever leave. When he was 3yo, Steve from Blues Clues went off to college (left the show). My child became very upset and asked if he would have to leave home to go to college, and that he didn't want to have to leave me. I assured him he could go to college locally and it would be ok with me. I figured, he's 3... he'll totally want to leave home at 18 like I did. That was a sign I shouldn't have brushed off that easily... We actually get along just fine so I'm not complaining just yet.

If it's any encouragement, I've always had sand filters and above ground pools (prior to my current), once you get it cleared up, you shouldn't have trouble staying on top of it. My dad went through DE and cartridge and settled back on sand filters, so I've never strayed. I like to backwash. ?

Thanks, @Tenab, that is encouraging to know. I hate to think about doing this with that little 1000 gph cartridge filter that came with the pool!

Just did the 3 am check, FC 25 (guess I really should have worn my glasses at the 10 pm check!) and CC was 0.0. Water looked absolutely crystal clear and -- dare I say it? -- sparkly, at least what I can see of it!

So quiet and peaceful, even with the cicadas singing. Even the dog next door was quiet -- maybe they take him in at night, maybe he's a deep sleeper. Thoroughly pleasant experience.

Hubby checked at noon, using 10 ml and one heaping scoop of DPD powder. Got 23.5 for a result. He wasn't sure about that, did 10 ml and 2 level scoops, got 19.5 FC. Dosed pool with 2.5 c chlorine.

Now here's the question: which reading was correct? I'd have used one heaping scoop and gotten his result. Maybe. I'm thinking there's user error in there, but which user? Or am I over thinking this?

I'm concerned because he does the daily testing a fair amount of the time. Who's doing it right? Whose readings do we trust? Maybe we'll both test the same sample for a while...
