Am I missing an O-ring or something?

Hi all,

Last year when closing up the pool I broke the inlet fitting. I got it out and put a new one in. In the picture you will see me pointing to the other fitting that I pulled out of the broken one. I didn't notice any O-ring or Teflon tape but it seemed to have a bunch pipe dope on it or something. I cleaned it off and wrapped it with Teflon tape. It doesn't seem to tighten up and I even tried it with quite a lot of tape. Am I missing something here?

Maybe the threaded side of barb connector is one size too small? 1 1/4” vs 1 1/2”? Aside from that is it leaking? You could also get blue monster tape lots of folks swear by it.
