Algae Waterline and Hoses

Hi! We have a 12’x24’x52” above ground that we installed at the beginning of June. We are using chlorine and filter balls - not sure if filter balls were the right move but the arguments in favor of them seemed legitimate at the time of decision making. We use the TF-Pro for testing levels and Pool Math for calculating what/qty to add. So far, it’s gone well. CYA got a bit high right off the bat - not exactly sure why Pool Math suggested we add so much at the time of filling, by my guess is user error. I’ve got CYA down to around 60 (that test seems so subjective to me as I feel it depends on how well one can see and I spend a lot of time wondering if I can still see the black circle or if my photographic memory sees what it knows is there.😅) All of that to say, the hoses that bring water to the pump have started to look a bit green/brown. We also get a bit of grime right above the water line that we scrub daily with a scrub daddy to keep it from accumulating. I’m wondering if this is normal (hose discoloration and grime line) or a telltale sign that we need to do something before it spirals. Water has been clear to date - no shocking has been necessary.
FC: 7
CYA: 60
Side note: any recommendations for Comparator Block accuracy/reading? When I use the daily block, I get way different results for chlorine levels than when doing the drop test. Makes me skeptical of the pH test results since I don’t have anything to compare it to.

Lines may just be dirt. If you are concerned, do an OCLT. Link-->Overnight Chlorine Loss Test

You can also use a brush to brush the lines...

Ignore the comparator Block and just use the powder/drop FAS-DPD for your daily testing. Use 10mL sample, each drop is .5 FC.

Thank you! I’ll do the overnight test tonight. I’ll keep on with the chlorine drop test as well, it’s easy enough and seems much more accurate. I had hoped I was just missing something with the comparator but it seems about as accurate as guessing the color of those dip test strips. 😂

FC dropped from 4 to 3 between 9:30pm and 4am. Looks like it passed the test. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

The grime is likely sunscreen and other health products mixing with the dust, pollen and dirt that blows around or enters on feet, floats on surface, and deposits at your waterline.
