Algae is Winning....

Hey, Jamie, thanks for asking! The water is getting white, so I assume that is dead algae, but still in SLAM. Barely got 3" of rain for the Tropical Storm, so the CYA didn't drop much (why doesn't 3" go in the pool like it does in the rain gauge?) & no rain since. Backwashing & rinsing every day & filling up with a hose has helped some. The CYA sample today was 60. So less chlorine for the SLAM. Glad your loved one made it out safe! Every storm is different - the eye actually passed over us with Cindy. Strange! I am having a big family BBQ on July 4th & cancelled a camping trip this week to tend to the pool - so I hope it clears up soon! Sunday I had a slight setback - the impeller broke. Luckily I was standing right by it when it happened, then found not one but two impellers in my stash of parts! My sweetie says she will never complain again about me not throwing anything away. Total time the pool was down was 3.5 hours, but hopefully recovered without too much of a setback. Any fast way to get the white/gray dead algae out? Still can't see the botton. But I do see the brush in the shallow end. Thanks for all of your help!

Too bad about the storm not giving you more water, but with your CYA at 60 now, at least you're making some progress in lowering it with your backwashing and filling. Glad your had those impellers handy when you needed them! I tend to save things too, but finding them when I need them is another story!

I'm not sure about clearing the white any faster. You might look up adding DE to your sand filter as I've heard this can help improve the sand filtration in normal circumstances, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea during a SLAM or not (I have a cartridge filter, so this is only something I've read along the way.)

Keep up the good work! I hope you can call it done in time for your party. You can swim during a SLAM, but you want your water clear enough so that you don't have a safety hazard of not being able to see to the bottom.

Yes! Just a little cloudiness in the deep end (no swimming without adult supervision!). I did break down & use a clarifier about 4 days prior & it helped. I have used it in the past with decent results.

But, with so much chlorine to do the SLAM, with a high CYA, it looks like the vinyl is a little bleached out. With so much rain last week, the CYA is now 40 (Monday's reading). Which is good! Next time lower CYA before SLAM, even if it is a pain!

We are trying to learn how to keep the water sanitized now - we don't know our pool anymore! lol But thanks for all the support & new info & new test kit. we are armed & ready!

Thanks so much!
