Air pocket in pump

Hey all,

First time pool owner here, recently switched from paying for pool service to doing it myself, so this website is a tremendous help.

My pool pump typically has very small air pockets/bubbles, but today the size of the air pocket is much larger than normal, see image. The pump is running at 1750, ~8000ish gallon pool, filter is new from 2-3 months ago, no leaks in the pool itself.

Thinking this could be because of a dirty filer? Or maybe an issue with the seal on the pump? Or is this size of an air pocket normal?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Welcome to TFP! Many times it's a sign that air is getting sucked in (suction air leak). Check the easy stuff first like the lid O-ring and drain plugs for lube. If there are any valves in front of the pump check those as well. Pool water level should be good and weir skimmer door operating freely. In some cases (like mine), there is often some air under the lid. It's not a big deal as long as the water doesn't fall too far down or you loose prime completely.

If all of that checks out, I would check the filter to see if it's dirty.

GR,

A dirty filter can cause the bubble under the pump lid to increase, so it would not hurt to clean your filter..

I have my pump, increase speed, twice a day for half an hour or so, just to purge the air under the pump lid..

It does not appear to me that you have much air under your pump lid.. I run at 1200 RPM and have a similiar sized bubble... I do not have a heater.. If I had a heater, I'd have to run around1600 RPM..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thank you for the response. I'll do some research on the O-ring and lubing drain plugs, since I've never done either.

Thank you for the response. I do have a heater but never really use it, so not sure if that changes anything. I also run my pool at ~3000 RPM for a couple hours a day.
