I'm back! I got a lot of great advice the first time I made a post a few weeks ago when opening our pool for the season. At that point I added baking soda for alkalinity and CYA while using Liquid chlorine to maintain FC levels.
However, we had about 4-5 days of heavy rain a week and a half ago and I'll admit to missing a few days of adding chlorine (this is my first pool ever, did not know that was a huge mistake! now I do.). It led to a green pool that looked similar to opening season, yuck. After trying to get it back with a vacuum and normal amounts of chlorine I realized we needed to shock again. That is what I did on Friday, two days ago, and now the water is finally slowly changing from green back to blue. I added 4lbs of dichlor over about 36hours, testing frequently and making sure chlorine levels were high. The initial shock I put in got used up by the next day when I tested, so I added more to maintain that high level.
CYA - 40
Alkalinity - 80
pH (just tested) 7.2, added a box of borax so should be back in range now, will test
I have a Taylor K2006 test kit being delivered tomorrow, finally bit the bullet.
My question is; the pool is at a teal color at the moment and still cloudy. Chlorine level is about 5ppm which is nowhere near shock level for my amount of CYA, but it's been about 36 hours since that initial shock and the bit of followup I added. Do I need to keep chlorine levels at slam/shock level until the pool is clear, or will that 4lbs clear it up overtime?
I am aware of the chlorine overnight loss test but I don't think I can complete that correctly until my test kit arrives tomorrow. I was hoping to have a semi-clear pool for swimming this weekend so wanting to do this whole shock/slam thing correctly and not cut any corners. Any advice is appreciated, as soon as my test kit comes tomorrow I will post my levels. Just want to make the most of today in terms of clearing it up!
