Advice on pool tiles needed

Hello everyone. I'm new here (so please take it easy on me) and I came here for advice. I own houses with pools for 20 years. The most annoying part of pool maintenance for me is dealing with tiles falling of the walls. I'm not handy at all but eventually I got tired of paying people for repairs: they charge a lot and tiles don't stick for a long time anyway. So I learned to do it myself. My work is ugly (sorry - no pictures, b/c I don't want people die of laughing) but more reliable than professional. Yet, it's very annoying, like I said. In the old house, the pool guy told me that tile break off due to the water seeping behind the first cope stone. So I paid a lot to seal it but it didn't help. What I do notice, in both houses, is that more tiles break off on the uphill side than on downhill side, so I suspect it's because of ground waters, at least in part. In this house, most tiles fall off the spa wall, so I suspect that the wall curvature is also important. Unfortunately, I cannot change curvature and I cannot do anything about the slope. But is there anything that I can do about tiles? I'm planning pool resurfacing next year to deal with cracks and overall wear and tear. I will replace tiles in the process, too. (I'd be happy to get rid of tiles completely but they tell me it is impossible.) One of the pool guys suggested one row of 6x6 tiles instead of 3 rows of 2x2 on the theory that larger tiles won't break off as often. Is this true? Are there any other ideas? Thank you!

Hey there Sashka :handwave: welcome to TFP-

Y'know, your problem sounds like a true annoyance. If it were *my* pool, I think I'd get rid of the tiles all together and take the pool finish all the way up. I'd also use AquaBright as it is amazing stuff and will last much longer than plaster.

If you want to see some AquaBright pools, do a search for BDavis466 posts here on TFP. He installs out in California and shares pics of the finish/pools. They're gorgeous!
