OP - Tough call... You may have to vote tobreak the tie.

FWIW, I also love my Intelliflo for all the reasons you discussed. I can't vouch for the plumbing differences, but your current timer setup will work. Without automation, the controls on the top of the Intelliflo will control speeds, etc. (BTW, that control panel is an expensive part. Buy a pump cover just for extra protection from UV/Houston rains)

Technically you could just pull the power end from your existing pump and bolt the Intelliflo power end right up with no plumbing changes. With that said, I prefer to remove existing pump and install with high temp unions (see link).

If you do decide to go with a VS, do yourself a favor and put in surge protection for the pump drive. They tend to be very sensitive to power surges.
