Have a 27500 Gal pebbletec chlorine pool. Live in Cypress, TX area. I use liquid chlorine and cal hypo shock to help keep CYA levels within range. What is the best product to use when I need to raise my Alkalinity and Calcium hardness. I am always looking to keep from adding anything that raises my CYA. Thank you, Jim

Welcome to TFP.

What test kit do you use?

What are your pH, TA and CH levels?

You almost never need to raise TA. If you must raise TA use baking soda.

Chemicals suggested for raising TA. Their effects are:
  • Baking Soda = big TA change, small pH change
  • Borax = big pH change, small TA change
  • Soda Ash/Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) = big pH change, big TA change. Probably more TA change than you want. It is never recommended for use.

Welcome to the forum.
Most fill water in the Houston area is fairly high in CH and TA. Be sure your testing methods are accurately showing your pool water chemistry results.

Thanks...I use the TF Pro. My levels are good now but every now and then I need to raise my TA/CH levels and usually buy some Alkalinity Up or CH Plus product. Was just wondering if there was a specific brand recommended for raising TA & CH.

Hey neighbor, cal hypo isn't needed, and is likely counterproductive in our area. LC is a good choice, but a saltwater chlorine generator (SWCG) is ideal for our climate, especially since you have a large pool. Have you considered installing one?

You should never need to add baking soda (raise the alkalinity) of your pool under normal circumstances. This is especially true in our area. I have very high TA fill water, and I suspect yours is higher than average as well.

Same goes for CH. I get plenty of CH via my fill water.

What's the TA and CH of your fill water?

SWCG adds nothing to your water except chlorine. Plus it's the cheapest, easiest, and most convenient way to chlorinate.

Why do you think you need to raise your TA and CH? TA and CH are added to your pool every time you use fill water.

usually buy some Alkalinity Up or CH Plus product.
You'll probably never need either. Let's get some test results from your TF-Pro.
