hi. i'm wanting to add temperature probes to the suction (inlet) and return (outlet) lines. the plumbing (PVC) is ~12-14 yrs old. how risky is it to drill 3/8" holes into the 2" pipe? i'm concerned i may crack the PVC during drilling due to age and direct exposure to sunlight all this time.

thanks,

Not risky, I have 30 year old pipes and did it.

However, before you do that, what make and model of temperature probes? And, what are you using them for?

It’s the 10kohm temp probes like these: https://a.co/d/4Qxm2Qy

I built a pool controller (pump start, filter monitor, etc) and want to see the water temp. The probes already work in my controller, I just haven’t installed them in the pipes…

This is the amount of pipe I have to play with. If I drill and pipe gives, I only have one shot to fix easily. And the fix would involve a coupling and very likely look like adding the 2” Tee. So I may just go with that from the get go. Thanks.

I think you'll be OK drilling. Drill small pilot holes first, then use the right size drill bits to enlarge the holes.
i actually bit the bullet and drilled the pipe. i did drill in a place where if i messed up, i had enough pipe to install a coupling to fix. thanks!
