Hi All,

I recently open my pool for the first time ( I usually hire a company, but, decided to do it myself. I have likely missed some steps so, please don’t go too hard on me! :)

My pool was green after running my filter and I didn’t properly vacuum.

- I shocked the pool on Saturday and Sunday and was still greenish and cloudy.

- On Monday I bought HTH green to blue and followed the process. Added the shock, then added the floc to the skimmer and recirculated for 2 hours. And I let it settle overnight.

- on Tuesday morning the floc is still floating but, a lot settle with the algae at the bottom. Later that day, the floc hadn’t settled so, I chatted with HTH help desk and they said to wait or I could disrupt it by spraying water. I decided to wait.

- Wednesday - this morning the floc still didn’t settle. So, I sprayed if with water and waited for particles to settle (2 hours). I then vacuumed to waste and got most of it out and it looks much clearer.

I plan to vacuum to waste again this afternoon.

Question: Can I add Chlorine to the pool turn on the filter? I read that floc is bad for my sand filter. Do you see a problem with turning on the filter if there is some Floc in the pool?

Thanks for your help!

If the filter hasnt been on when floc is in the water, then it can maybe be saved. Get all the floc out before turning the filter back or you risk gluing all the sand together and having to replace it.

In the future, algae just means you need more chlorone. Follow the SLAM process using one of the two test kits TFP recommends.

Thanks Bperry!

I got most of the Algae/Floc this morning and I’m going to try to vacuum the rest this afternoon. The second pic in the thread is some of the leftover that I hope to vacuum to waste.

Do you think there would be issues if there is some floc sediment left from the final vacuum?

I’ll SLAM it tonight!

Do your best to get it all out.

Note that you cannot perform the SLAM process without the correct test kit. Do you have one?

I was just reading about the kits I am looking at TF-100 Test Kit.

Can I go to my local pool store can test as an alternative until I get a kit?

I got it tested Monday and these were my results.
We wont even read the pool store test results. They are THAT unreliable. You can safely add 3-5ppm of liquid chlorine only until the test kit arrives. Thatll keep it from getting worse.

If you download the poolmath app it has an “effects of adding” tool that lets you calculate stuff like that. 3-5ppm liquid chlorine is 0.7-1.0 gallons each day.

After battling Flocc for a few days, I have finally got (hopefully) all of it out! As of last week Saturday the pool is clear and my levels are looking okay. I have not purchased my proper test kit yet, but, another local pool store tested by water that uses the same kit and my results were good with the exception of chlorine and stabilizer. I have since been using the Pool Math app to add small amounts of liquid chlorine and using test strips until my kit comes in! Thanks for your help and cheers to all of those that replied!
