I'm in norcal and theres no rain in the forecast but just to know how much to worry. Turns out royal pools didn't ship everything so i'm waiting on a few parts yet but my dig has to start now.
i leave for a long weekend in 10 days so...

1 how bad is a rainstorm in the unlikely case one shows up

2 at what stage of the build should i feel comfortable with a rainstorm happening?

If a rainstorm hits it’s most likely this time of year from a thunderstorm, they can produce a lot of rain in a short amount of time, my biggest concern during the excavation phase up until Shotcrete.
Have some plastic sheeting handy to cover the walls with if one comes into the forecast, your goal is to keep the rain from eroding the walls and taking the dirt with it and depositing it on the floor where it will need to be removed.

On a side note, I had the pleasure of spending two weeks in Ukiah (previous occupation in the summer of 2015), just south of your area, what a beautiful area.IMG_5929.png

As a Sacramento native and older than dirt, I can tell you that 95% of the time we get a storm before September first. Then you are good for awhile.
How deep are you going, and have you considered renting one of those little front loaders: @ Home Depot:

Im doing a diy vinyl pool from Royal as well. My process isn’t very fast, so anytime we get rain it ends up in the bottom of the pool. So it doesn’t make a mess, I dug a small pit for my sump. Anytime it rains I plug it in for an hour or so and it’s fine the next day. Highly recommend doing what I did. Dealing with the mud is a huge pain in the Rear.
