I'm SusanT in NC, recently retired, with a 10 year old 8500 gallon fiberglass pool that I love. It has presented challenges since we're on well water, which has high iron content. I'm no chemist, so for years I've relied on the local pool store to test my water and assist in any problems with unbalanced water and pool stains caused by metal content. For years they've recommended STAIN OUT to remove the brown stains followed by METAL OUT, a chelating agent. The STAIN OUT has risen in price from $29.99 to today's cost of $54.95 for 2 lbs. Nature's Chemistry Metal Free (phosphate free), has also risen in price, from $15.99 to $29.99. Needless to say I looked for other options this year. The pool place wouldn't identify what chemicals were in STAIN OUT, so I researched and found a post someone somewhere made claiming the product's content was 100% Vitamin C. Started by reducing PH with a PH REDUCER from last year. Added 1/2 cup at the shallow end (my stained pool steps). WOW, a hug blob of the brown stain disappeared! Read the contents and it too was Vitamin C! Purchased 8lbs Vitamin C powder for $30 on Amazon and had a beautiful blue pool in a couple of hours. Followed that with chelating agent called METAL OUT. After 2 hours the water was so cloudy I couldn't see the pool bottom. That was a week ago. Started dumping and refilling, bringing up chlorine slowly and the brown stains returned. Discovered METAL OUT was not phosphate free. IS THAT WHERE I WENT WRONG? I'm starting starting all over again; reduced chlorine levels; turned off the chlorinator, reduced PH, and have applied the Vitamin C. Sparkling blue water again with no brown stains! Hated to, but purchased METAL FREE because I couldn'tfind anything available that was phosphate free, (which was delayed and should be here by 8pm.) ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
