A hole behind the liner?

Just noticed a "hole" behind the liner when I was closing the pool this season. My PB said this is due to either rain / water and/or an animal digging a hole from behind, and need a repair with pool plaster / formaldehyde before we open the pool. Has anyone experienced something like this (and fixed perhaps)? The diameter is approx. 2 inches and worried.....

The vermiculite has collapsed, quite common, I doubt it’s an animal, it could be water erosion though, just keep an eye on it. I wouldn’t worry about it until you put a new liner in.

Thanks for the feedback...the only issue is that we put in a new liner in last season so the liner is basically new. Do you think gluing another layer of leftover liner would help? Not really a perm solution but may make me feel a bit better.....plus don't want to spend hundreds of $ (or even thousands) to repair - not sure you can cut that area and patch up.
