Hello, we just added a heat pump to our SW Florida pool, we want to heat the water +90deg on the weekends. I've been using tablets in floater. Since we added the pool heater in March it seems algae has been forming more more quickly especially over the last month. I went to get my water tested at Pinch a Penny, CYA came in at 173 very high, Alkalinity at 53 and Phosphates at 575.

Would switching to a SWG be "the way to go" to keep our water chemistry under control since we run the pool warm on the weekends?

What are some recommended DIY install SWG's? Considerations - low cost to purchase, multi year warranty, good quality.

Gunite pool ~ 13,000 gallons
On west side of home - screen caged
Variable speed pump - runs 24/7 at around 800RPM
Cartridge filter
GulfStream HeatPump HE110-R-A

Thank you

You will find TFPC is quite a bit different than pool store methods. We advocate the pool owner doing their own water testing with a proper test kit. See Test Kits Compared

You need to follow the SLAM Process. To do that, you need a proper test kit. I suggest the TF-100 or Taylor K2006C. A proper test kit is needed to get the accurate water chemistry results needed to follow the TFP protocols.

While you are waiting on your test kit, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine / plain bleach to your pool each evening with the pump running. This will replenish the FC lost each day to the sun and also inhibit any algae in the water from growing further.

You do need to determine how you wish to chlorinate the pool going forward. Of course you will likely have to do a very large drain refill if the CYA level is correct.
