Salt water conversion from Ionising system - Copper levels an issue?

I'm new.......http://www.troublefreepool.com/images/icons/icon6.png

We have a 40000-50000 litre pool. We need to update the pool equipment and would appreciate some suggestions on sanitising systems.

We live on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia.
The pool gets very little use however it is landscaped into the backyard layout so removing it is not an option.
Our aim is to try and make it a little easier to maintain – we experience large fluctuations in temp and have had trouble maintaining water quality.

The pool is fibreglass, installed in early 1980's, we installed new Davey 8 star rated smart pump & a sand filter with zeobrite.
Since buying the house in 2001 we have replaced the DE cartridge filter & "experimented" with an ionic Pool Fresh system and then a Nature 2 with mixed results.

Very interested in opinions as to which salt water chlorinator would suit our situation.
Some seem to run at higher levels ppm levels than others (ie 3000ppm others from 4500-6000ppm) does this mean you just run the pool for less time?

Appreciate any input

And is the copper that is in the water a problem? which test is the best for measuring copper levels?
Does the copper need to be removed before we install a salt water chlorinator?
