Stains on steps

First determine whether they are from metal staining or organic. Crush up some Vit C tablets and put in a sock and lay it on the steps. If it lightens and removes the stains it is metals and you'll have to perform an AA treatment. If it's organic in nature, a trichlor puck will lighten it when you rub it or set it on the steps.

I used the AA in a sock to remove the stains with great success. Now the stains are reappearing I cant keep doing the AA in a sock every 2 weeks, how do I stop this?
Add a metal sequestrant. http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/137-metals-in-the-water-and-metal-stains will tell you whjich ones are best.

Metals are like chocolate. Sequestrants are the hard candy shell on an M&M. Do you see chocolate in a bag of M&Ms? No. But it's in there. Just wait for that shell to get dissolved and you'll find lots of chocolate in the bag.

That has to be the best, and easiest to understand explanation of what a sequestrant does, that should be in pool school.
