You're right, he doesn't have a reflection!
To my credit, I posted this in the wee hours of the morning.
I do see that the angle of the sun could be so high that it won't cast the bear's shadow, since he's so low on the horizon, relative to the tree line.
Ie. the shadow is directly underneath the bear, or somewhere close to the center of the animal, hence we wouldn't be able to see it unless we were standing on the edge of the pool next to the bear, looking down un it.
Not 100% sure though, as I'm not an expert on sun angles and shadows. HAHA
If you look real closely, you can see the reflection of the bear's claws on the brick coping. So, the high sun angle certainly has some credence for the lack of a larger shadow.
