Thanks Richard. I am willing to learn. I would hope wouldn't need that much, why would you? That's alot of bleach, I though you just needed enough to raise it to 10 ppm for shock level.

Yes, you need enough to raise it to shock level. But then you need to continuously test, then add more bleach to KEEP it at shock level. Depending on the pool owner's diligence and the severity of the algae problem, the shock PROCESS can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.
Okay I understand now. That is only if you let a problem occur though correct? If you keep all your chemicals in balance you will never need to shock right?
Do you really have to add shock daily? Or can you typically go every other day maybe. Also, thanks to all of you for all your information.
We call it bleach, so as not to be confusing, but generally, yes every day. You can boost higher and skip days. But you end up losing more to the sun that way, which costs more money.

JB, how often do you think I'll lose cya and have to add more if I frequently backwash as in once a week, losing an inch of so of water everytime, and if it rains occasionally.
You will lose the same % of CYA as the % of water you remove. One inch is probably around 2% in an average pool.
You only need to backwash when the pressure goes up 20-25% of the clean pressure. If the filter is properly sized, that could be only once every few months.

Once you get your water under control, you won't have to backwash very often at all. I think I backwashed once every six weeks or so last summer.
I actually think I'm oversized, at a 21 inch filter and a 2hp speck. Well it's actually lower hp than that.
Your filter is just a little undersized, but should work fine (if you were buying a new one we would recommend a minimum 2.4 sq. ft. sand filter). You pump is likely oversized. Can you post a pump model number?

That pump on low should be decent for filtering...
When the pressure was barely about 25 psi one time, on low you could barely feel any water flow at all out if the jet. It was practically not on.
What is your clean pressure? You want to backwash the filter when the clean pressure goes up 25%. My pump won't move hardly any water if the pressure is at 25 psi.
