DIY pool plumbing pressure test

Has anyone done a DIY pool plumbing pressure test to find a leak in the plumbing?
I did see a rig out there to test the skimmers. This is for the suction side. But, the directions were sketchy. Mostly, how to build the rig. Nothing on function or operation, and diagnosis.

Is this best left to the pros?
They want close to $400 to pressure test the pool around here.

Depending on the layout and plumbing of your system you should be able to rig up something and use winterizing plugs.
