Hayward bump handle stuck

I'm just trying to get started for the season and it seems like the pin that moves up and down with the bump handle is rusted and won't move. Can I use WD40 to get it moving or do I need to take the top lid of the filter off (it looks like it has about 20 nuts & bolts to be removed if that is the case) Would love any helpful info...thanks!

Try giving the handle a couple of gentle taps with a rubber mallet or a hammer and wood block (hit the wood block and not the handle) to see if that loosens the pin. Be very gentle so you don't break the handle or bend the pin.

Thanks...that worked! I actually took the handle all the way off so I would only hit the pin.

Follow -up question...any idea how often should I take the whole filter apart and clean the inside "fingers"?
