I've kind of been winging it the first 4 years to mixed success and now trying to dedicate myself to taking better care of my pool. Water in my area tends to be hard, high alkalinity, but low PH. Currently dealing with some green water after coming back from vacation with CYA just measured up at 90 ppm. Starting SLAM with liquid chlorine.
