Aqua Smarte makes a couple of different versions of their system. All of them use metals to fight algae and trichlor for chlorine. Switching to a SWG really only requires making sure the copper level is not too high and installing the SWG, plus there might be some minor chemical rebalancing to do.
Metals in the water have some risk of staining, which is not an issue for a SWG system. The SWG also doesn't use trichlor, so CYA does not build up and cause problems. The only significant disadvantage of a SWG is the up front cost of purchasing and installing the unit.
