Pool noodle in skimmer

I like the idea of using a pool noodle in the skimmer to prevent freeze/cracking. However how do you keep the pool noodle from floating on the water surface and therefore offering little protection?

I would cut it so either you had to wedge it down the sides or so the cover would hold it under.

I usually use a gizzmo but if you can't for some reason (for example you might have an aquagenie skimmer that does not accept a gizzmo) then I take a gallon of antifreeze and add rocks or pea gravel to the jug until it's no longer buoyant. You can use that jug year after year until the plastic on the jug wears out and cracks.
