It appears we are on borrowed time (per my local pool maintenance store who also built our pool). My deck is in rough shape. It's cement with medium-sized river rock as the aggregate (I think) and hard on the feet. The plaster is all stained, I suspect we have leak and the 5-valve in-floor cleaning system has some issues. Lights do not all work. We switched to SWG 2-years ago and updated the filter & heater.

I've started deep-diving into pool renovation posts here but most seem a bit dated. I'm just getting started but a looking for general advice before I get started. I have a consult Friday.

Thank you!

The first thing you want to do is make sure they do a FULL chip out of the old plaster. Not just the "bad spots". ALL of it needs to come off. It will cost a bit more but will be so worth it.

Next will be finding out where it is leaking? You will want them to pressure test your pipes to see if it is one of them.

It is short term (partial chip out) VS Long term (full chip out).

Short term a partial chip out is cheaper and even a bit faster BUT (here it come) you can only plaster a pool two times. If you go with a partial chip out this time then WHEN the pool needs a new plaster job down the road they will HAVE to do a full chip out on TWO layers of plaster. Much more work and time involved so quite a bit more costly.

It is up to you................think about how long do you plan on being in this home and go from there.

Original pool company looked over pool for a renovation assessment. They do not recommend doing a full renovation at the time. While my deck is in rough shape, he thinks the plaster looks to be in very good shape. The recomendation for now is to talk to a floor epoxy / coating company to see what they can offer for the pool deck Our pool deck is exposed aggregate with cracks. The cement/concrete has worn down so the expose aggregate is pretty rough. Also several of our pool cover "pegs" will not go back down.

He said that if we want to redo the deck, then we should redo the pool plaster at that time after the deck is completed. For now we are replacing the discontinued pool actuator for the in-floor cleaning system and changing out the in-floor heads since a couple are not working properly.
