20x40 Inground Vinyl Liner

I have a 20x40 vinyl lined in-ground pool. The pool is about 44 long, if you count the roman end in the deep end and liner covered stairs on the shallow end. I had the liner patched once this year and they said it was getting brittle. He fixed 9 holes in the vinyl. We have since started leaking again! We are ready to close the pool for winter, but fear losing water and having to keep the water level filled in the winter! So we are currently looking at a liner replacement, that I was originally hoping to wait till spring to do. Does anyone have any suggestions? And suggestions on liner installers in Southeast Indiana/Cincinnati area? So far I have had one quote of $5400.

That seems extremely high for a 20*40 liner. Unless you are out in an area when pool professionals are scarce, I would continue to call around. Regarding your liner and leak, have you allowed the water to continue to leak until it stops? Maybe you can find the area in question. Are the 9 patches around the seam, or they were tears in the liner, patched up, here and there?

Reminds me of a tree that is being taken down next week. First quote was $4,000. Second quote was at $2,000, but they would leave the wood on my property. After 6 quotes, I am at $1,100 with the stump (Legit company that has insurance and replies to e-mails). Most quotes were at $2,000, but one person was at $1,850.

Patience is key, but it appears you may not be able to be patient on this one. You may look for experienced individuals who work for pool companies, that install liners and work on the side. Ask friends for referrals and just keep digging. I have been planning my liner change since the day it was installed, which is early, but at least preparing yourself is always best.

The liner replacement for my friend was $3,900. It is 28 mil and the pool is quite large (30,000 gallons) free form (25' * 44'). The foam was $200. The liner track was included, but the water was completely dumped. Do not know what the water cost, but assuming like $300. Also, check the local community in Sunman to see if there is a community Facebook page, etc. Good luck and keep us posted!

I recently got a somewhat lower estimate (~$4800) for a somewhat smaller pool (16 X 32) in the Chicago area. I've called pretty much every pool company that comes up in various on-line searches, and they either specialize in cement pools, do not cover my location (too far away) or don't call me back. Everybody I know with a pool doesn't have a vinyl liner. It definitely seems like vinyl pools are going out of favor in my area. The company that replaced it last time (12 years ago), has gone out of business.

I definitely encourage you to keep looking, but I think there's a regional aspect to it.

All patches were in wrinkles on the bottom of the pool. Where the liner is getting brittle and the wrinkles are tearing. I will continue to call around and see if I can get some better numbers. Its pretty much forbidden to drain a vinyl inground pool for any length of time correct? I do have a well pit next to the pool I can pool ground water away from it with a sump pump

You should leave at least 1' in the shallow end, so the answer is "kind of". If they are on the bottom of the pool, you are pretty much stuck and either have to patch or replace the liner. Also, it is hard to tell if the structural integrity of the walls, floors, etc. will hold through the winter.
