1st Time Opening with SLAM

Hi all,

Found this forum late last year and wanted to manage my pool myself this year without going to the store constantly and spending lots of $$. Opened the pool to a swamp and planning on SLAM'ing it with liquid chlorine. I've been reading through forums and guides but unsure about the CYA. Do I need to raise CYA, adding stabilizer, before slamming it? Or can I immediately SLAM and worry about CYA after? Thanks for any advice, only 2nd year pool owner here.

Using Taylor K2600 test kit,
FC = 0
pH = 7.4
TA = 300
CH=600
CYA=0

I would first add about 10 ppm of liquid chlorine then re-test in about 15-20 minutes. If the FC fell to zero let us know. Otherwise, if the FC held reasonably well, then it's safe to add stabilizer for a CYA goal of 30. Once the CYA is in the water (see below), then increase the FC to "12" which is you actual SLAM level. Maintain it as best as you can until you pass all 3 SLAM criteria. Follow the SLAM Process page and you should do fine.

Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. After soaking for about 20-30 minutes, squeeze the sock often to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.

Just looking this over before heading to store. Does adding 10ppm of liquid chlorine mean adding X gallons amount of chlorine to get me to FC 10 ppm?

Yes. To figure that out, download this...Link-->PoolMath

Poolmath allows you to configure your pool, and has an "effects of adding function." You can use that to figure out how much liquid Chlorine (bleach) to add to add 10ppm.

Make sure you brush the liner well in the area you're pouring it in since chlorine is heavier then water it can be sitting on your liner and fading it.

Just wanting to make sure this is normal but I followed the plan above, my testing results were as follows:

5/10 6:00pm Added 10ppm liquid chlorine with a goal of 10 FC (Brushed Liner)
5/10 6:20pm Still had 10 FC so I added stabilizer with a goal of 30 CYA
5/10 7:00pm Dropped to 5 FC, added chlorine with a goal of hitting SLAM of 12 FC (Brushed Liner again)
5/11 7:45am Still very green pool. Backwashed filter and then tested. FC=1, TC=2, CYA=35. Added chlorine with a goal of hitting SLAM of 14 FC.

Am I ok to keep at SLAMming and trust the process?

Towards the end of last year, we had this algae that was 'resistant' to our granular shock, copper algaecide also didnt work for us, and we only cleared it out with Green to Clean (alongside granular shock). Just want to make sure I'm heading down the best route. Thanks!

Yes, trust the process. It will work. You are very green, and you have a sand filter (which will take the longest of all filter types to clear a green pool).

Ive hit two of the goals of SLAM, didn't lose any FC since last night and my CC appears to be close to 0. Colors looking
way better, lots of bubbles. Just waiting on clarity now. Its coming along

Just a cheap brand at 10% Sodium Hypochlorite. It's Pool Essentials Chlorinating Liquid.

If the psi on the gauge is up 25% from clean psi then you'll need to backwash. Or maybe adding de to your sand filter tto help filter out the fine stuff.

Don’t try to interpolate between marks on the CYA test tube. Fill only to the lines on the tube until the dot disappears.

In this case, treat your CYA as 40.
