LOL - I have to up the CYA in several pools - but before I do squat/add anything, I take a measurement (CYA and Bo, mostly), put the current and desired measurement on the customer's bill, and then let him know what the charge will be. I'm actually surprised by the amount of CYA/Bo dilution (via rain) a few of the pools had over the winter.
But to blindly charge? You're right to fire him.
Good luck on taking ownership (but more importantly, taking the initiative to learn how!) - As a pool guy, I respect that! I'll always have a good business because there will always be 3 types of people:
1) Those who don't have the time and just want to enjoy their pool (the best of customers),
2) Those who are lazy (and they're bad customers...), and
3) Those who take the time and learn it themselves.
