Since TFP has been so helpful, I'm going to ask another question. We ordered our diy kit last week and are planning to start excavation next weekend. Yay!

The hubs is nervous about lighting and sees it only as an expensive future problem. He is willing to consider low voltage lighting if I get enough good information. Since we will have a black granite liner, I would like the light for some safety and ambiance but I do not need it to be lit up like a carnival ride. Our pool is 16x36 with 8' steel steps. Planning a short rock wall the width of the deep end with a waterfall in it. So my questions are....

How many lights do we need to give some light to the majority of the pool? I have a thing about symmetry (hence the rectangle and straight steps) so I'm thinking having one light on one long side would bug me. The majority of seating will be on both short ends. I would think that lights should ideally not be aimed in those directions??? Can I get by with one light in a dark pool? If so, should it be in deep end or shallow? Or if I need two, can they be right across from each other? What depth do they usually put lights? Basically, I would love your thoughts on lighting.

Also, I think it would be nice to have some kind of lights highlighting the rock wall face/waterfall. These would not be submerged. Do these need to be "pool lights" or landscape lights? Is there some kind of rule about how close landscape lights can be to the pool?

Finally, are there any certain lights or brands that tend to be less maintainable or more trouble free than others? They don't have to be fancy. We just want something that works, stays working and will not fry us.

Thanks in advance for any help! I'm amazed at this community's commitment to helping strangers and doing it with such enthusiasm! Thank you!

That is is very Cool! I think I will still need some light on the face of the rock too, but that is really pretty!

I hope it is as pretty in real life as it is in my head! I still haven't figured out the posting pictures thing, but I hope to when we start making some progress. Thanks for the link!

You're right to think about lighting now! I can't help on the waterfall, but I can tell you about our recent experience.

We have a rectangular 40x15 pool. We have three lights in the pool along the long side. The lights are located on the patio side so they do not shine into our eyes when sitting on the patio. I feel like the three lights is not overkill. In fact, if we were doing things over again, I would have thought about how to put a light in our tanning ledge. It is 8x15 and looks very dark against the rest of the pool. We outlined the pool in low voltage lights, which look very nice.

Happy planning!

Thank you, LeighHop! That helps! Your pool is stunning! It's actually exactly what I wanted (except we need the diy vinyl option). I changed from the full width steps to 8ft straight vinyl over steps because the hubs wanted walls to turn on during laps. It also made it easier with th liner coming with the kit. I hope my dark liner looks close to yours. I also love the narrow decking! It is just beautiful! Thank you for your thoughts on the lights. It's kind of hard not knowing if I should stagger them or put them all on one side. Lighting is a tricky thing that I don't want to regret not doing. Thanks again! I hope you are enjoying your pool this Summer!

Hey there, not sure if you’ve considered any underwater lights for the falls, but we used 4 of the low voltage Kichler 15711SS27 Underwater Lights, shown here:

They’re really small, so they’re easy to conceal, and they don’t have to be wet to leave them on (unlike some other underwater lights). We went with the 2700K, which was a special order, but have a much warmer look than the standard 3000K. Later, I added a VOLT® All-Star™ Cast Brass Spotlight for a spot light on the slide, shown below, but these are really common among other manufacturers, unlike the underwater lights:

For my planters I used the VOLT MINI China Hat Path & Area Lights for area lighting and the VOLT® Infiniti™ 30 G3 Brass LED Spotlights for some up lighting on the plants (which are nice because they’re really compact), shown here:

For the palms (and planters on either side of the waterfall, but they’re hard to see right now), I used the VOLT Fat Boy Lights, shown here:

Hope this helps give you some ideas.
