hydrostatic relief valve

We know we have a pool leak. Water was dropping 4-6 inches a night. Found a leak at the light, fixed it. Water kept dropping.

We sump pumped as low as we could. At night there was about 1 ft of water in the pool, in the morning, there was 3 ft. No rain. The pool is about 28 years old.

If the hydrostatic valve is leaking, will it still add water to the pool to balance?

Will the hydrostatic valve allow water to come into the pool and still leak?

We are going to pressure wash the pool in the morning and try to dye test the main drain if we can see it.

I hope you understand what I'm talking about.

Our plan is to remarcite the pool after we find the leak.

Thanks to one and all for a speedy reply.

The hydrostat is a check valve that allows water in if the water outside of the pool is higher than the water inside of the pool.

It can leak, but the leak should stop when the water in the pool is equal to the water outside of the pool.

You need to be careful that the water level outside of the pool is not higher than the water level inside of the pool because that creates a risk of the pool floating.
