Just wanted to confirm, is it time to replace my 8 year old pool pump? Makes a screeching type noises on start up.also seems a little weaker than before.
Thanks will do, the motor looks weathered , I'll try and ID it shortly.Sounds like your bearings may be getting worn. Now might be a good time to make preparations to replace the motor. If you provide us with your current pump, motor model number, etc, the experts here can help give you some options of what to shop for. At the same time, don't forget to update your signature with your pool equipment for future reference. Oh, and your location too! Have a nice weekend.
Been quoted 260 for motor and seal replacement and 500 for complete new Hayward pump.Take a look and feel at the impeller through the hole in the strainer basket to make sure you don’t have something going on in there. Even if it is bearings, you can change them or have them changed.
More case-by-case basis really. If the pump assembly (wet end with basket) is still in good shape, then replacing just the motor usually saves a few bucks and time reconnecting plumbing. Then it's just a matter of motor replacement and some electrical connections. Note - Ask about the correct "Go-Kit" for your pump which is often used to ensure you have all the required gaskets & such. Some owners opt to replace the entire assembly if the whole thing is getting old, weathered, if there's good deal that's simply too good to pass up, and/or if they are simply more comfortable with doing the plumbing and replacing the whole unit as opposed to removing just the motor. Others like JohnT might have some other pros & cons based on their experience.Any benefits in doing the whole thing compared to just the motor?
Indeed. Screeching started to occurred during the last 12 months on and off. But the old one used to hum since we moved here 7 years ago. So I'm assuming it's probably now broken in .In post #1 you described it as a screeching noise which would seem more indicative of the bearings. Yesterday you describe more of a buzz/humming noise. That almost sounds more like the capacitor. Did you new motor come with a new capacitor? Is the motor turning at all?
