New build and not sure if we should have the spa a part of the pool or a separate entity outside. I see us using the hot tub every time we go in the pool and evening but not so much in winter (whether it's part of the pool or not). It gets pretty cold out here and I'm no polar bear.

If the spa is integrated it will ONLY be usable when you have the pool open. So no use during winter.
An integrated spa is a nice water feature that can provide on OK spot to sit in warmer water with some bubbles.
A stand alone spa is always warm, more comfortable, far more jets and bubble action, and can be used in the winter. But you will have two bodies of water to manage.

My vote is a stand alone hot tub.. preferably closer to the back door than the pool and open all winter. Nothing better than soaking in hot steamy water while snow flakes fall on your face.
