We are considering a pool for our backyard. The yard is surrounded by a secure fence, neighbor's mature trees as well as neighbor's homes. Our side yards are narrow. Will it be possible to excavate for and build a pool and decking etc?

We really can't answer this without more specific information, however there are narrow excavators that can fit through surprisingly tight spaces, this may add some to the cost of the pool as these models tend to lift less dirt per scoop so extend digging times. Take for example the Bobcat model 418 with retracting tracks which can fit through a 29 inch wide opening.
Do you have street access via a wooden fence? Neighbor just took down 2 sections of his to get it done.
There is plenty of digging equipment that can fit through spaces 3'-6'. If you give a PB some money they will figure out how to dig a hole. 
You be suppressed at how large a piece of equipment they can get in your backyard. The access problem only increases the excavation. cost.
