I have a Pentair Whisperflo pump that is 3 months old. I clean the strainer basket in the pump and pool baskets religiously but once per week I am having to remove the back of the pump to expose the impeller and remove a baseball sized hair ball. I can always hear a noticeable difference when the clog is there such as a louder pump and my flow has decreased. Is this the norm for these pumps? Is there some precaution that I can take to lessen this?

Get yourself a "skimmer sock" for your poolside skimmer basket. You can order them on-line, or use a 1 gal paint strainer netting, or even an old knee-high nylon. But wrap the inside of your skimmer basket and it will catch a LOT of debris before it ever makes it to the pump. I never run my system without it.
