Hi, I am the first time pool owner. Sorry for the dump question. I have an in ground vinyl pool. I noticed tonight after pump off, there is no water left in the strainer basket. Just wonder if this is normal. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to TFP. 
Ideally we would like to see the pump strainer basket retain it's water for start-up. Some pools have a "check valve" before the basket to prevent water from going backwards back to the pool. In other cases, there may be a very small air leak somewhere that once air enters the system is allowing water to equalize and flow to another part of the system. Is this something new that's been happening? How old is your pool? Have there been any other odd indications around your equipment such a water leaks or seeing more air in the return jets perhaps?
Also, please add your pool info to your signature by going to the top of the TFP web page (just under the Pool School button) and select "SETTINGS". On the next page look to the left for a menu bar that says, “MY SETTINGS” and go to "EDIT SIGNATURE" to enter your pool and equipment info there. It will help us later.
