The active chlorine level when the FC is at SLAM level which is about 40% of the CYA level is the same as in a pool with an FC of 0.6 ppm with no CYA so less than found in commercial/public pools. Nevertheless, as my wife can attest to after swimming in an indoor community center pool every winter, her swimsuits would only last for one season (elasticity gets shot) while in our own properly managed pool those swimsuits last for 7 years. It's not that the suits will degrade in a day -- it takes longer than that -- but the effects on swimsuits, skin, and hair are noticeable.
