10/2020 SC Pool deck & tile renovation

Project: Pool deck replacement, and new tile installation for a 20x45 gunnite pool. The deck is roughly 1500 square feet of cantilevered comcrete slabs.

Demo work started Oct 5th. Our concrete deck had cracked slabs, peeling surface layer and in general, has been turning to rubble since we have owned this old pool. The tile was chipped and had scale deposits.





The project is nearing completion. Will add some pics of the progress soon.

There were some casualties.

The diving board was a 10’ sr smith. They could not bust up the reinforced concrete and asked if they could cut the bars. I should have said no. We are installing an 8’ one to replace, which will probably be safer for kids anyhow. Will save the 10’ board and perhaps reinstall someday.

One of my skimmers was in bad shape and we found a leak that I had long suspected. Decided to install two new ones. You can see pics of the old deck and how bad it was.

underwater light wire got cut. Going to upgradeto an led.

After the concrete was up, the tile contractor popped off the old light blue ones. We are installing some dark conalt blue ones. So many of the choices had green or brown in them.

The walls were in Great shape considering the age. Very little patching was needed to prep for the pour.

And here all the forms are in place for the deck. We chose a standard flat edge.





This larger area pictured next had sunken in and had several long cracks. They raised it up and leveled, and reinstalled the drain.

We reduced the size of the deck by 6”-18” around the perimeter. The plan is to put river rock around the edges and large planters.

1970 is an estimate based on how old the previous owners daughter and husband are in the stories they told me about high school. One of the builders thought he knew who designed it but I haven’t been able to find him. There’s a single tile on the steps that says master pool.

Here are some pics of the pour and shortly after.



The guys did a great job on grading for the drains. You can see the main one by the screen porch here, Still covered. One of the mysteries that I now know more about with this project is that the pool house is bathroom drains under this area. There’s a vent. I’m still not sure if it goes all the way to the septic field down the hill or if there’s an old waist line under ground at the spot. Building codes were very different in the 60s and 70s

One last pic of the finishing work. Those guys worked from 11am till 8pm that day.



More details soon. After almost 4 days with the hose on we are 1 foot away from the tile. Hoping to turn on the pump today and getting the skimmers set up but want to have the foreman check everything first.

Here are a few pics of pressure washing the plaster. Won’t be refinishing that for a few more years. I found it interesting to see some pale green/blue copper scaling on the plaster. When full they just look like dark stains.





Beginning to fill it. Some spots of the plaster were patched with pool-brite.



New diving board and skimmer. Almost full & concrete was still pretty dark.



My helper has been hosing down the concrete to prevent blotching


Fence is back up, but I still have alot of work to do with cleaning it, and putting in the river rock edge.

Pool house reno will come another time.

Very happy with the results! We went for a swim at a cool 68 degrees today. Looking forward to next summer!
