For winterizing an AGP, what works better in the skimmer: gizmo, pool noodle, or just a plan old water bottle? What worked best for everyone?

We're trying to open our pool this year and the company we used to close apparently used a PVC pipe in our skimmer that we can't get out. Does anyone have any experience with this? We don't want to pull to hard and break something. We just aren't sure how to get these out!
