Pool heat pump - annual service needed? Unit leaked pool water and now rusted out

No one has looked at my Hayward HP in 4+ years. Had no indication that would be a requirement, no issues with it.

Do pool heaters evaporate water quickly?

The rate of evaporation will increase along with the temp differential between your pool temp and the night air. More evaporation in the spring and fall and less in the middle of the season.

Pool is almost 96-97 by late day, cools to 89 at night

Hopefully you’re kidding. Our chiller has no problem keeping otherwise 93+ temp down below 90. It does run all day to do that, exactly what it was designed to do.

We quit solar covers entirely for the very reasons detailed here. Limited benefit, total PITA.

So the raccoon paid me another visit last night...

Likely illegal. We had a bad raccoon problem that we solved completely with a few ‘Yard Enforcers’ (Amazon) strategically located around the pool. Once they get sprayed a few times the word seems to get out. Problem completely solved.

Help with options for a Fiberglass Pool bowing out after draining

I would think that the folks that coated the pool would have noticed that and mentioned it if it was there before they began work.

Requesting Recommendations for a Pool that was Doomed to Fail

There are anchors in the form of augers that will screw into the lawn/grass anywhere from 12” to 3’. Use that to secure a cover on the lawn side.

Can I use the water out of my sump pit...

Why are you pumping water out of the sump pit if you are not planning to drain?

    What is this bug?

Looks like a good way to take a relative non-issue and turn it into a real problem.

    Brown stains on fiberglass pool

By process of elimination I’ve narrowed it down to the salt I used. My fill water tests .03 for iron from a dept of public health test and 0.0 from my own test. I use nothing else that would contain any significant amount of iron. I’ve capitulated and started using Aquasalt for any salt additions.

    Magna Latch Frozen

Although it is often used incorrectly as a lubricant, this sounds like the very purpose WD-40 was designed for.

At what point does a bucket test point to a leak?

Unless I’m misunderstanding the workings of the bucket test, evaporation should cause the water levels in both the bucket and the pool to go down the same and stay even with each other. If the pool level descends faster than the bucket, there’s a leak.

    Safety cover was worth it!

An unmarked unfenced pool camouflaged by snow seems like a really bad idea.

Has anyone ever documented an adverse reaction to the ‘salt water’ draining onto their grass or into flower beds? I haven’t seen it.

A knocking sound from a HP usually means low refrigerant. If allowed to continue the compressor may be damaged. You should not use it until it has been serviced.

    Pool Brush Recommendations for Fiberglass

Excellent question and I have sometimes wondered the same. There is nothing on my FG surfaces to brush off and I just use my brush to dissipate chems and maybe sweep that piece of debris out of a corner or off the stairs so the robot can reach it. The robot climbing the sides is a cheap parlor...
