Help deciding which solar rate plan to choose!

I am in NCA as well but I chose the baseline flat rate,"Tiered Rate Plan E-1", for several reasons. 1) My pool uses solar heating so I need to run during daylight hours and hottest part of the day is usually when the rates of the other plans are higher. 2) I refuse to give up the AC during the...

TX freeze and outdoor hose bibs

Yes, the conventional wisdom is let faucets drip that are on outside walls. More specifically, outside walls with poor insulation and areas where you cannot open to the inside such as the cabinet below a faucet. But as was pointed out by others, there are other mechanisms that you can use as...

TX freeze and outdoor hose bibs

Called the Mpemba effect but it has been disproved by several scientific studies. It just depends on how you do the experiment and how careful you are to eliminate extraneous factors. But even so, it probably does not apply to a dripping bib as that is an entirely different cooling mechanism...

TX freeze and outdoor hose bibs

Allowing the bib to drip, indoors or outdoors, reduces the probability of freezing, causing an ice dam and bursting the pipe. For hard freezes of long duration, it is a good idea. By allowing a small drip, it gives a pathway to relieve the excess pressure that builds up as the ice expands. This...

Is anyone else having trouble finding 31.45% muriatic acid?

What is really criminal is that they charge about the same for the two products so the "Green" one is effectively costing you twice as much. At least with KemTek it isn't that much different.

Is anyone else having trouble finding 31.45% muriatic acid?

I think you are looking at the wrong SDS sheet. There are two versions, one is safer that is the lower concentration in the green bottle. The one in red bottle is higher concentration and the label says 20 Baume. I have used both in the links and need twice as much Kemtec as red bottle Klean...

Is anyone else having trouble finding 31.45% muriatic acid?

The price here for a 2 gallon box of 15% is not much different than 1 gallon of 30%. So about the same price per %MA. Is it that different in LA? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kem-Tek-2-Gallon-Muriatic-Acid/50323853 https://www.lowes.com/pd/Klean-Strip-Klean-Strip-Muriatic-Acid-1-Gl/1002858920

Winter plants that can survive a summer under solar panels

Why couldn't you just leave the rack out? With a rack, you could also leave the panels on them. As long as they are drained, they will survive the winter just fine.

Winter plants that can survive a summer under solar panels

I use red clover in my garden beds for winter cover. However, I am not sure though they will survive the summer under the panels. They may go to seed before you put out the panels but it depends on timing. But a bigger concern would be the hot plastic when panels are off that could sterilize the...

    Musty Smell

Now but do you ever use AC? The smell can last longer than the water.

    Musty Smell

The evaporator plenum can collect water while the AC is running if the drain line is clogged.

    Solar panel replacement -

There are two general classes of materials used in pool solar panels, EPDM synthetic rubber and PVC/Plastic derivatives. They will both heat the pool in similar ways. EPDM is a bit tougher than PVC so usually will last longer but it can also degrade from high chlorine exposure. EPDM usually uses...

    Ignitor for firepit

I would go with the battery. The have continuous spark while piezo are single shot per push. Seems more grills are moving in that direction. I think. They are a bit more reliable.

    Barrel Aging Wine

Realy bad idea. There are certain chemical reactions that occur only at higher temperatures plus excess heat will over oxidize the wine and create a dark brick color with many undesirable flavors. https://winefolly.com/tutorial/wine-faults/

    Barrel Aging Wine

Varietals that stand up well to a whiskey barrel should be Cab (Sauv & Franc), Zin, Syrah, Verdot, etc. but it might be too much for a Pinot. Also aging for 6 years in a barrel will result in over oaked wine (i.e. will start to taste like wood). The rule of thumb is 1-3 weeks per barrel gallon...

I did not say it was learned in physics classes. What I said was it is based on physics. All engineering is based on physics.

Quad de vs cartridge - lil help?

In terms of flow rate, you can use this chart that is in the Hydraulics 101 sticky. This shows the three filter types with the same flow rate ratings. However, the same flow rating does not mean the cleaning cycles are the same. That seems to be related directly to the area of the filter. The...

    Pool fill time.

It depends. If all three are independent sources then 3.59 hrs. However, if they all are from the same house for example, the up stream head loss would change the flow rates of all three hoses when all three are on at the same time so it would take longer.

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

It was a bonus for running a test lab a couple of decades ago. ;) Also, I did a test with my main pump which is a 1/2 HP impeller on a 1 HP URHP motor so the motor is a bit oversized. The PF for that was 0.6 on high speed and 0.5 on low speed.

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

Below is a video of the scope as the pump primes. When it starts out the motor has about a 2.5 msec V-I offset or a PF of about 0.59 then it decreases to about 1 ms or a PF of about 0.93 which is pretty good but not perfect. NxyCAxNYEOk

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

Not a 100% load because a pump motor is rarely run at 100% load but I can run the test on my spa jet pump motor which is a PSC motor. It will be close to full load but not quite there.

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

That's correct but that capacitor is designed to provide a small phase shift in the starter winding. It doesn't mean that it will fully compensate for both windings induction especially over varying loads. Simply having a capacitor is not enough. A run capacitor size is designed to provide a...

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

Not quite. The capacitor is in series with the starter winding. So it will have a minor impact on power factor but I doubt it would fully compensate for the induction.
  29. mas985

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

CSCR and PSC motors have the capacitor on the start winding: Also to compensate for the induction, the capacitor has to be in parallel with the inductor and not in series.
  30. mas985

Portable Device Chargers - Terrible Wastes of Energy

No. Start capacitors are only engaged during the start process and although run capacitors do help with power factor and efficiency, they only affect the starting winding. There is no capacitor on the main winding so the load is still inductive. And that reactance changes with load so you would...
