If you have one of the test kits recommended here I wouldn't go to the pool store. I'd use it to post a set of test results and let the pros here get your started in the right direction.

One more question.. If my pump is running at 11.5 then I backwash around 14?

We'd love to see a pic?? It's possible that there is algae present and you cannot see it. Look for any nooks and crannies that might have small bits of algae in them. Lights, steps, etc.. How does your waterfall work - does it pour over something or come out of something? There might be...

When I checked yesterday it was 20. I'm using Pool Calc app on iphone. High shock says 14.

My high end FC says 14. Would it hurt anything if I bumped it to 20 for the night? I'm going out of town for the night Friday so I'm hoping to stay ahead a bit til I get back Saturday. Thanks!

Why does my pH keep rising? I lowered it to 7.4 Thursday before the swimmers got in.

Did you ever order the test kit? I read earlier that you added CYA then backwashed and was thinking of adding some more CYA... Your shock level is very dependent on your CYA level. Are you testing CYA with strips? I'm wondering if you're having trouble reaching and maintaining your shock...
