    New Pool

My next door neighbor is getting a pool installed and the water is scheduled to go in next Wednesday. In Ohio this is right in time to have to close the pool. My neighbor has always said I have the nicest water she has ever seen in a pool and wants me to help her with her water. (Thanks TFP!) I...

    Chlorine loss with auto cover

I think you are fine. That is about what I lose over a 24 hour period with my auto cover. Some days a little more some days a little less. If you had algae you would losing much more. Earlier in the year I let my FC get below the minimum and immediately brought it back up to 8 ppm with liquid...

    FC loss with auto cover

What is your CYA? Mine is 60 and I keep my FC in the 7 range which is higher than the chart recommends. I have been managing my pool that way for three years and never had a problem. Reading these posts I find that too many pool owners try to keep their FC near the minimum and then run into an...

    FC loss with auto cover

Also remember with an auto cover if you test for FC right after you open it many times your CC can be high because the CC is trapped under the cover. If you leave the cover off for an hour or so and test again your CC will return to normal.

    FC loss with auto cover

Chlorine loss with auto covers can be a bit tricky. What I found with mine is that if I close the cover soon after the swimmers get out I will go through more chlorine because the chlorine is still working on the organics left behind by the swimmers. So the chlorine loss may be 2ppm overnight...

    Can't keep my FC

I have a vinyl pool about the same size with an auto cover and a T-15 SWG. I keep my CYA at 60. When your cover is closed your FC should drift up like it did last year. In my opinion you are keeping your FC too low and it had dipped below the minimum FC level and you have the start of an algae...

    High alkalinity low ph

I agree. If the PH stays steady I wouldn’t worry about it. If the PH rises with the high TA (as it should) adding acid to bring the PH down will eventually lower your TA.

    PH Difference

Thanks for all of the help. I did complete the calibration. The 7.0 solution read 6.86 and the smiley face did appear and stay there and I believe the PH calibration read 6.98 at the end. When I hit the button to end the calibration I did not get an error message. I will do the calibration again...

    PH Difference

Thanks for the hints. I thought I calibrated it correctly but will do it again. One thing that did confuse me a bit is that when I put it in the 7.0 solution to calibrate, the solution reads 6.86. Is that correct or is the solution bad? When I put it in the 4.0 solution it reads 4.0.

    PH Difference

I could not agree more. I managed the pool great using the Taylor. I actually bought it because I got lasik surgery and I now need readers. So without my readers the comparator was a little small and with them it seemed distorted. I still have the large comparator that came with my TF100. Maybe...

    PH Difference

I bought an Apera PH 60 to test the PH of my pool water. Supposed to be accurate to the hundredths. I am not sure why I bought it as I have been successful managing my pool water with the Taylor surecheck (the small comparator). I think I just wanted a new toy! Now that I have used it...

    PH Test Question

Yes my FC was at 11. That may explain it thanks.

    PH Test Question

I took a PH reading today and the first picture is when I first shook it up. It looks like about 7.2. I got distracted and when I came back the color had turned much pinker and it looked to be 7.8-8.0. I was gone only a few seconds. Is this normal? I never noticed this before. I expected the PH...

    High FC and Salt Levels

Running the chlorine high within the proper CYA range will not result harsh water. Swimmers actually comment on how nice my water feels and at times the FC is in the 10 range. When I first started following the TFP method I too tried to keep my FC on the low end. But as you get more comfortable...

    High FC and Salt Levels

I am sure one of the mods will chime in but with a CYA of 70 keeping your FC at 2-3 is asking for trouble. My CYA is 70 and I keep my FC in the 7-8 range and with an auto cover if I don’t monitor it it easily can jump to over 10 and I have no problems with that. You are much better keeping your...

Cloudy water - but normal test results

I would SLAM too. I have a SWG and my pool water looks much better when I keep the FC in the 7-8 range. Sometimes when you flirt with the minimums the pool can pick something up especially after a heavy rain that can drop a lot of organics in the pool.

Higher ppm chlorine to keep clear water

I too have a SWG and with an auto cover my FC always runs high. Usually in the 7-9 range and if I don’t pay attention for a day or two it can creep higher than that. I used to fret about keeping my FC in range. Now I don’t. So as @Jimrahbe says never worry if it is too high. My water is gin...

Help me understand the empirical evidence for pucks

Many members here, like me, found this forum after their CYA got too high while trying to maintain a 1-3 ppm FC level. That led to cloudy water, an algae outbreak, shock treatments clarifiers, algaecides, flocs and anything else the pool store could sell you. I don’t know about millions of users...

    Auto cover and FC loss

Usually I open my auto cover for at least 4 hours per day. But over the last two days due to me just not getting around to it it was not open and no one swam. Check out these numbers. On Tuesday July 21 at 5:00pm my FC was 6.5. I had the SWG running at 50%. I did not lower it which I usually do...

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

I added 20 pounds of Calcium Chloride by spreading it in the deep end of the pool in front of the return. Salt cell still working and didn't have any trouble with it dissolving. I did have to brush it around a bit. Guess I was just lucky.

Thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed explanation. This site is invaluable. I will raise my CH.

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

Any other Mods care to join in? Even though a vinyl pool doesn’t require calcium I figure that raising the level to 250 won’t hurt the pool water or affect the pool. I have read that soft water can be corrosive to pipes etc. Now I am the farthest thing from a chemist so I really don’t know how...

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

Pool math says to add 32 pounds of calcium chloride. I will start with 22 pounds, test, and add more as needed. Do I just purchase this at a pool store and dump it in the pool all at one time? Is there a technique to adding the suggested amount? Will it cloud the pool for a while? Thanks for any...

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

I posted this in the everything else thread, but didn't get a response. Figured all of the chemical experts hang out here. My CH has been consistent in the 100-125 range for 2 years now. (Sometimes I get 4 drops until the color change, sometimes 5). I am having heater issues and I dug up my...

    Does Polyquat 60 raise PH?

Well you hit that nail on the head. My wife and kids laugh at how obsessive I am with my pool water! Will get it into the lower 7’s. Thanks!

    Does Polyquat 60 raise PH?

Thanks. How long after I add MA can I test and have it be accurate? I want to add a few smaller doses until I hit my target.
