    Finally some rainwater dilution!

Dman, is this question for the OP or for me? If it is for me, then no, I do not have an autofill and my CYA does not decrease at the same rate as CH. I usually replace less than 4 inches of water per season using my garden hose. This method should be increasing my CH due to evaporation of pool...

    Finally some rainwater dilution!

I haven't been on the boards lately so please don't bash me for my upcoming comment. I had problems with CH a couple of years ago, new plaster pool so CH went from 200 to 650. I was able to get it down to 450 with partial drains and was content with that 450 number. After a couple of months went...

Which is a better deal-Liquid Chlorine or Bleach

Wow, $20 for 5 gls of 12%. My pool store sells (2.5 gals @ $4.50) 5 gals of 10% for $9 also once in a while it is buy 2 get 1 free so i usually pay $9 for 7.5 gals of 10%, I'm not sure if it is 10% or 12% but using the lower concetrate is still cheaper.

    Not your average cya question

Hi Stuart, I am South of hammocks behind Metro Zoo in Miami. What part of So FL are you from? All pools are different so with that said, these are some things I have learned form my pool 1. I have lost CYA every year in my pool, I try to keep it at 50 but every 4-5 months I actually add CYA...

New Pool, New TF-100 Kit and here are the results...

Welcome to pool ownership!! First, your T/A is way high. You should read the stickies and start to lower by areation. Second, Your PH is starting to get high. With a new plaster pool expect your ph to rise quickly. I would lower PH to 7.2 -7.4 range. This BTW, is the first step to areation.

Solar cover on all the time

I leave my solar cover on all week and remove on weekends. I have seen no issues so far. The cover is too big to be taken off and on every day. Is it better to partialy pull back the cover and leave approx 1/3 of the pool uncovered for a couple of hours a day? (deep end I suppose?)

    Picking a "baseline" test kit

I have the Taylor kit and have compared it to the pools store as stated in your question. Three different pool stores use Taylor as well and their results are inconsistent from my readings. I've even took two identical water samples ( I added two drops of CL on one to throw off the tester in...

    Salt Level Testing

I always have my salt checked when at the pool store and that test is always consistent so I believe they are doing it correctly. They use a small meter type device that has a small bowl. I always get 2100ppm and that is roughly were I started at, I do not have a SWG, just add salt for feel. I...

    Trouble with high CH

Jason is correct. Please post your numbers. PH rises quickly from 7.0 to7.4 in my pool so I have to add acid every two to three days. It is important to test daily at least the PH.

    Trouble with high CH

Vonda, It sounds like I have the same problem as you do. I have DiamondBrite plaster and It is about 7 months old. My plaster looks whitish and I have lowered the PH to 7.0-7.2 and brushed. Dust comes up when brushing. I am starting to see the blue and black specks that is supposed to show in...

    Scale Deposits

I have small brownish, gritty stains on my walls and was told I might have scale, this thread. I also noticed my plaster getting whiter. I lowered my PH to 7.0-7.2 and brushed for a couple of weeks and that seemed to make my plaster look better ( I was able to see the colored specs in my...

Newest numbers...need some reassurance and insight....

I take my pool water to two major chains here in So FL and it is hit and miss. I used go to them at the beggining to double check my own tests because I was unfimiliar and not sure I was doing them correctly. It soon realized that once you do the test a couple of times it really isn't Rocket...

Need a little help with current numbers

Chlorine will go down by itself through breakdown by sunlight or consumption of organic material. The chemicals you talk about are to control PH and TA which is different. I know high level of CL affect your PH reading but I am not sure itf it errs to a higher or lower reading. I would wait...

    Solar cover and high FC

Most people report less chlorine usage when the cover is on. It could be that you are adding the same amount of chlorine but are using less so it builds up. Lower your SWG percentage and monitor the CL level.

    Scale Problem

I have small brown and yellow spots that I think are scale (I have a thread for this in Algea section) and WaterBear suggested the a no drain acid treatment from United Chemical. I spoke with a rep named Erwin from United Chemical and told him my situation and he said that I most likely have...

Here's a copy of my modified TF Test Log

That's a nice log. I use a log that I created and have two extra columns one for time test was done and one for comments. If I add chemicals I write it down and how much quantity in the comments. This way I can see patterns and can have a reference. Also in the comments, I write down when I...

    Ph Too High

Also, post your other numbers. This way the other members can give you advise. Like, your TA has to do alot with PH and how it bounces up and down. I'm a little concerned on the fact that salt has been added to your pool so early after being plastered. I have read that you should wait a month...

    Numbers don't match up

EDIT 5/22/07 TMQ I moved this to its own thread so you can get better answers I'm a newbie and I have been testing my own water. Help with Taylor K2006 PH test

I have read the instructions that came with my test kit and it states to hold the bottle vertical. At first, I was holding the sample bottle and swirling it vertically. After doing the test a couple of times I figured they meant the regeant bottle because I noticed the drops were not consistent...

    Bleach Tablets

ChemGeek, So if I use a Solar Cover then the chlorine will not break down as fast as not using a cover? I asked this question in another post due to living in Miami and I have been adding .5 a gal every 2-3 days since I had my pool built ( completed April 20th). I have been reading the Pool...

    Bleach Tablets

I'm a newbie so I can ask this question with out fear of ridicule. I was in the pool dept at my local Home Depot and saw these "Magic Bleach Tabs". They are 10 tablets that claim if you add 1 gallon of water per tablet you get one gallon of bleach. It retails for $2.49 You've heard the saying...
