Which test kit results would you trust

Last summer was our first with the pool. I tested pretty much daily for the first couple of months, then developed a 'feel' for the chlorine usage and would just add the amount I had been adding after testing, which for our pool with the solar cover installed was about 1/2 gallon a day. I...

Need opinions on what to do please

The biggest differences between pucks and liquid chlorine is that liquid chlorine will require almost daily maintenance, but it won't add stabilizer so you won't have to deal with draining & refilling as a means to control the CYA levels. My daily pool maintenance is 5-10 minutes. Check levels...

Need opinions on what to do please

No, stay away from Clorox as it has other additives you don't want in your pool. Chlorinating liquid, 10% or 12.5% is what you want. Most Home Depots, Lowes, and farm type stores carry it, as does Walmart. We typically use Walmart Pool Essentials 10% as it's the best value in our area.

Need opinions on what to do please

No. The first step is to get a good test kit, TF100 or Taylor 2006C, to find out what your pool chemistry really is. Then, based on the test results, we can make recommendations to help keep your pool clear, algae free, and sanitized! I also would recommend the PoolMath app. It makes logging...

    What is your daily dosage?

Between 3 & 5 quarts a day. Solar cover has helped reduce this a little. Our pool has full sun for 11-12 hours a day this time of year.

new SWG, different results using different tests

I bought the K-1766 salt test in preparation for doing the conversion. Our pool measured 1200ppm of salt with no salt added other than what's in the chlorine.

Chlorine levels not rising to calculated levels

Only way to know for sure is to do the OCLT. Test in the evening after sunset. Add the recommended amount liquid chlorine while the pump is running. Retest after 30-60 minutes. Did the amount of chlorine you added raise your FC as expected? If not, your pool may have more volume than you...

    CYA reducer

Liquid is best. Chances are your pucks contain stabilizer which will continue to raise your CYA level. You might consider doing a SLAM to get rid of the algae.
  9. BadDogPSD

    CYA reducer

Seems like your free chlorine levels are too low for your CYA levels. This is why you are seeing algae. For a CYA level of 100, your target for chlorine is 11-13ppm, 8 is the minimum, and a SLAM would require 39ppm until all of the algae is eradicated.

    CYA reducer

We keep our FC at +/- 10ppm and swim with no issues. The only way to lower CYA is to drain & refill. Our CYA is 80, but since we are going the SWCG route, we are just leaving it there for now.

Large Discrepancy Between FAS/DPD and Regular CL Test

Not sure how much of a difference it makes, but can you add your chlorine in the evening instead? From what I understand you get a little more benefit as the sun wont degrade it like in the daytime.

    Brand new pool

I'm planning on adding a SWG too. I think we may still need to add chlorine from time-to-time on heavy demand days (hot & sunny, and/or lot's of use).

    Brand new pool

Chlorine tabs will also likely increase your CYA levels. Most on here check & add liquid chlorine daily and only use pucks when absolutely necessary, like when away on vacation. For our pool, I normally need to add about a gallon a day of liquid chlorine. My CYA is 80, and my target for...

    Brand new pool

When you use Poolmath and want to keep a record of your test results and what & how much chemicals you add, if you click the check mark in the top right corner it'll create a permanent record you can look at. It's helpful for tracking trends, and, since you've shared them, we can see the logs too.

    Brand new pool

It's easier for us to give recommendations if you post your actual test results. Not sure what OH is? Muriatic acid is used to lower PH & TA.

    Question about water sampling

Can't explain it, but I've had something similar happen. Tested FC in the normal spot at the normal time, 2.5ppm. Was expecting 7-7.5. Scratched my head. Rinsed the vials and took another sample from a different part of the pool. 7.5ppm. Huh. Did a 3rd test in yet another part of the...

    Cya not moving

Yes welcome! Sorry, I didn't notice this was your first post! 40-60ppm is generally the sweet spot for cya.

Is there a reason you want it higher?

    How often do you test?

First year with this pool, so I'm testing daily. I was starting to see some trends, but put a solar cover on today, so I'm expecting there to be some (hopefully good!) changes.

    Which shall I trust?

I've been learning about pool chemistry too, you are in the right place! Read the ABC's of pool chemistry and get a good test kit. The TF100 at TFTestKits.net is probably the best, a Taylor K2006C is also highly regarded. Unfortunately, water replacement is really the only effective way to...

    Water Test Kits

TF100 is a great kit & value. I upgraded to the XL version. I also have a Taylor 2006, also a good kit, but would go TF100 or TF100XL if you think you'll be doing lots of testing. If you become a TFP sponsor, you also get a discount at TFTestKits.net.

    Another trying to decrease TA

Our CYA is 90 and our target FC is 10-12. ** corrected information, evaporation does not lower CYA ** Currently adding +/- one gallon a day of 10% liquid chlorine to maintain 10ppm FC. We've also been slowly lowering the TA via the muriatic acid/aeration method.

Just when I thought I had my water chemistry under control...

I've had good luck increasing my PH just by pointing the return eyes upward so they cause the surface of the pool to ripple when the pump is on.

Just bought 8 gallons at WalMart last weekend. There were probably 50 or so gallons remaining.

    First day testing

Thank you. I'll re-read the ABC's. I appreciate the tip onthe 10 ml vs 25 ml sample testing. So apparently the pool company came by and service the pool today and dumped over 1/2 gallon of muriatic acid in... Apparently they missed my email cancelling the service. Sigh. Looking the the...
