Glacier Chiller Not Living Up To Expectations

This one time when I was in college my friends and I were so desperate to chill our pool we went to the ice depot and loaded up the back of a truck with like 500 lbs of ice and dumped it in the pool. It was like dropping one ice cube into a cup of hot coffee -- it all just disappeared with no...

Glacier Chiller Not Living Up To Expectations

Intesting read about your experience with the chiller. I have a Pentair 140 heat pump, that also runs in a chiller mode - though it's analogous to an air conditioner as opposed to a swamp cooler, and I'm in a low humidity area. My experience is similar, actually cooling the pool would require...

Pool Skimmer Socks, a huge thanks.

These are the ones I use, much cheaper: Amazon.com: 100 PCS--21", Disposable Bouffant (Hair Net) Caps, Spun-Bounded Poly, Hair Head Cover Net, Non-Woven, Medical, Labs, Nurse, Tattoo, Food Service, Health, Hospital: Health & Personal Care They work great, no need to clean and reuse them.

Why is my heat pump not producing cooler water on chiller mode?

I don't think having a chiller mode has any significant effect on the heat pump ability to heat. It basically just runs the refrigerant in reverse -- the ability to cool is inherent to the function of a heat pump, it doesn't take a lot to add that extra capability to one.

Why is my heat pump not producing cooler water on chiller mode?

From my own experience with a combo heat pump/chiller, and from what I have read on here, I think if you really need a functional chiller, you want to use a dedicated one. I don't think the heat pump style is practical for frequent use -- it's just too expensive to run. I think you would be a...

Why is my heat pump not producing cooler water on chiller mode?

Have you ever successfully used your chiller? Ours has never really worked. I mean, it puts out cold water and could theoretically cool the pool, but the electrical cost to do it would be astronomical, it would have to run a lot, at a time of year we are already running our a/c. I only use it...

Why is my heat pump not producing cooler water on chiller mode?

Seems pretty clear you have a problem. My heat pump/chiller is a Pentair, so different than yours, but I feel cold water coming out within a few minutes, and hot air coming from the fan. That's in like 110 degree ambient air temperature, the only time I would run the chiller. If after that...

    Skimmer basket "floating"

Try the hair nets. They work great, and 1/10 the price. That one you are using looks a lot thicker than the hair nets I use. Maybe that's restricting your flow.

    Skimmer basket "floating"

A rock shouldn't restrict the flow much, that's what I use. Just make sure it's too big to fit in the pipe in case it falls in without the basket. What kind of socks are you using? I just use cheap hair nets from Amazon: Amazon.com: 100 PCS--21", Disposable Bouffant (Hair Net) Caps...

TX Pool Repair Post Freeze - what a MESS

Just saw this post so probably irrelevant by this point - but I have that Waterway 165 VS pump. I know next to nothing about pool pumps, but I can say mine has run without a hitch since it was installed in 2018.

    Pool leaking into street

You might consider double-checking to make sure that is indeed pool water you are seeing out front. Simple way to make sure is get your CL level up, then test the water at the street and see if it has CL. We have a similar drain line on our house, and there are several yard drains and the...

    Skimmers vs main drain?

Leave it to my kids to figure out how to make them dangerous. They told me they couldn't get their frisbees off the bottom of the pool. What?? That's when I noticed they had used them to cover both drains. We had (another) very long talk about drowning after that.

    Skimmers vs main drain?

You'll want to switch it to a Taylor K2006C or a TF-100 if you still can.

    Heat pump and chiller

I have a Pentair 140 heat pump/chiller. While the heat pump is great for early and late season swims, the chiller is never used. We can get spans of 110 degree days here and the pool water can get to the point where it's not even refreshing at times. The chiller does cool water, but the cost...

    Air Leak After Filter Cleaning

Update - opened up the filter, and the o-ring was sitting down inside the filter. Maybe that happened when I took off the housing. In any event, still getting air. I figured out it stops happening when I turn off the valve for my suction side pool cleaner. The hose for that thing floats, can...

    Air Leak After Filter Cleaning

Thanks. Last time I have someone else work on my equipment, the guy left a huge mess, too. I am hearing some air or water moving around in there. Going to take it apart to check and lube all the seals this weekend.

    Air Leak After Filter Cleaning

A few weeks ago I had my cartridge filter cleaned -- a friend of mine who owns a pool service owed me some money, so I had him send one of his guys out to do it instead of doing it myself. I'm just now noticing that I seem to be sucking air somewhere. For example, if my pump shuts off, then...

    When to Clean Filter

Hello, I have a cartridge filter on my pool, which was built in April 2018. The psi gauge on the filter started off around 12 psi I think with the pump at 100%, and there are hash marks on the gauge -- the PB told me to clean the filter when the psi reached the next hash mark, which I think is...

    Pool Pad

I think you'll be better off with a poured concrete pad, especially with your A/C condenser on it. I also moved our A/C when we built the pool, and have a heat pump on it. It's on part of my deck. Before the deck was poured I had my fence contractor put in the fence posts to go around the...

    Skimmer too low...need suggestion

Is that still a risk if valves are also open to suction from floor drains at the same time as skimmer?

    Skimmer too low...need suggestion

A lot of skimmers have exactly that design as a failsafe if the water level drops below the skimmer, then the pump will suction through that lower port -- that's how mine is configured. No entrapment risk. I've heard people questioning whether or not that actually works. I can say one thing...

    Pentair Ultratemp question

It would also depend on the starting temperature of the hot tub water. Also keep in mind the heat pump will not work at all once it gets down to about 55 degrees ambient temp, so if your winters are below that, you won't be heating your hot tub during those months.

    Pentair Ultratemp question

I have the Pentair 140 that you are looking at. No hot tub though, just pool. It does have a "spa" mode on it though -- but I wonder how well that works. The people I know with spas have NG heaters, and use them to warm up the spa when they want to use it, and they heat up reasonably quickly...

Calling Those of you without main or floor drains

How widespread are auto fill problems? My PB is a friend of mine who primarily does pool repairs for home warranty companies. Thousands of pool repairs a year. His view on them, at least in our region where the summer heat means lots of evaporation, is that it would be crazy not to install one...

Calling Those of you without main or floor drains

I have main drains, but they are usually shut off, with water coming into the pump through my skimmer and suction side pool cleaner. Usually the skimmer valve is kept at about 30% open, and the pool cleaner fully open. For regular water circulation, there is no need for the main drains to be...

Who should have registration on equipment? Owner or PB?

My PB actually took care of all the registration and rebate processing for me, and I just got a $200 gift card in the mail. The only thing that sucked is that both my heat pump and cleaner had rebates, but I got a rejection on the lesser amount one because they said only 1 rebate per household.

What is stronger, a lemon or a belly?

Hi Dirk -- I have a similar setup with a Rebel cleaner. I have always found cleaners and hoses in the pool to be very annoying, so I just make it a practice of always taking it out before I swim. On my setup, out of my pump there is a 3-way valve, with one side going to floor drains, and the...

Equipment Pad Next to House II

Thanks! That was the other reason we moved our A/C unit. It was located in what would become a high traffic area with the pool in. The other reason we wanted the pool equip out of sight, aside from aesthetics, is because we have young kids. And all the piping, valves and equipment is very...

Equipment Pad Next to House II

I would put it wherever it's going to be out of the way, yet still accessible. Think about long-term convenience over builder convenience. I would not bolt equipment to new brickwork, they can very easily mount it on something else, I believe in my install they used strut channel posts. Are...
