    Sand or Algae?

Fully agree with you Miranda, and in fact we chose to shock the pool again last night (not with such a high dosage this time though). Interesting to look at it again this morning, and see that it was clearer still. Definitely will try to keep on top of it this summer, although we are away for...

    Sand or Algae?

Thanks for the advice Teapot, but would like to think that the filter is ok. Part of the deal with the cleaning of the pool was to service the pump & filter, topping up the latter with sand, so would like to think there are no problems here. Wouldn't hurt to check though, so will have a look...

    Sand or Algae?

At last, some good news to report! Kept shocking the pool until yesterday morning. Milky cloud got no better from one day to the next, but slowly stated to clear as the shock level reduced. Could just about see the bottom of the deep end last night. Added some clarifer, and it was even better...

    Sand or Algae?

Hi Kes, There is a dome on the filter backwash, and the water passing through it last night was constantly clear. This is what makes me believe that the filter is not picking up the 'dust' and thus it is recirculating constantly. Also, after vacuuming last night, when I reactivated the pump...

    Sand or Algae?

Good point Kes, apologies for the lack of info. Didn't take a reading by the time that I had finished last night, but it was between 15 and 20 at 6am today. Interesting that you suggest not allowing dust to settle on the floor; my thinking here was that vacuuming algae to waste would prevent...

    Sand or Algae?

Thanks for all of the responses. Back in office now, so unfortunately can't give you any info on the tablets that I have been using. Will see if I can get that info tonight, but I really don't think that CYA is an issue. For those that have asked location, we are in mid-Essex, out towards the...

    Sand or Algae?

Many thanks for all of the responses. Would have to check the tablets etc to see if there is CYA. If there is, then it is likely to be minimal, as the pool was completely emptied and refilled only a month ago. Am fairly sure that the same questions were asked last year though, and it was...

    Sand or Algae?

Thanks for the clarification Miranda. We are based in the UK (yes - we do get some sun here occasionally!). CYA is not commonly used in the UK, and I have none in my pool. I put a container at the bottom of my pool last night, and swept around some of the 'dust' to stir it up. I will do a...

    Sand or Algae?

Many thanks for all of the repsonses. Pool is covered when not in use (ie most of the time!) with a floating solar cover. There are some gaps, so it would be possible for some pollen to creep in I guess, although the covering seemed pretty even all over the floor of the pool. The covering did...

    Sand or Algae?

Hi, Would appreciate some advice. Was a new pool owner last year, and completely lost the battle with the water. It started to cloud, I continued to shock, but got nowhere. See previous posts for detail. Completely drained pool in the spring, and there was a huge amount of what appeared to be...

    Draining & Refilling

Thought I would update you. Pool man did get back to me, and came to do the clean/service yesterday. Started the refill last night, my guess is that there is still around a day and a half to go. He is going to return to balance the chemicals when the water is up to the skimmers. Pool is...

    Draining & Refilling

Hi, I posted late last year regarding problems that I was having as a new pool owner: green-pool-new-pool-owner-t16161-60.html Had someone look at the pool a month or so back to make some suggestions re opening, his suggestion was a complete drain and refill. He gave me a quote on doing the...

Green pool - new pool owner

Hi, I thought that it might be worth me posting an update. Turned pump off on the pool a couple of weeks ago, and looked at it earlier this week, and noted that the water is clear! Appears do be alot of very fine dust all over the bottom of the pool, steps etc. Could it be that my shock...

Green pool - new pool owner

Thanks frustratedpoolmum, but this wasn't mid shock cycle, this was after a decision to abandon cleansing the water until next spring.

Green pool - new pool owner

Thanks Teapot, I really don't know anything about it at all, and haven't touched it. Electrodes look like this: Does that seem right to you? Definitely wired up, as follows: Cotrol pannel look as follows: Have never done anything with it, this is how it was setup when we moved...

Green pool - new pool owner

Hi Teapot, Difficult to know what is happening when I pour the shock in, as it is milky in appearance anyway. I don't doubt now that the shock works, I am just dumfounded at how much of it I appear to need. I dread to think how much I will need when I try to open in spring. Spot-on re the...

Hopefully signature working now, so will try my luck at adding pics. Picture of pool, taken this afternoon: Pic of filter: For info, multiport is on 'filter'; valve above this (closed) is backwash; first red valve (closed) is vacuum; second red valve (open) is sump; and black valve at...

Green pool - new pool owner

Yep, shock is definitely effective. My concern though is the amount of shock that seems to be required. Given that I have put £40 in this week, in top of perhaps £100+ (I haven't actually worked it out) over the previous few weeks, with no end still in sight, I think that refill is the answer...

Green pool - new pool owner

Hi Casey, Thanks for the posting. Have taken some pics, will work out how I can add them, and will update my sig too. As regards whether it could be the filter, in my ignorance I have assumed that the filter is irrelevant. Assuming the quantity of chemicals added to be correct (and I am now...

...and after 3 hours, bucket is almost clear, with a very fine sandy type substance covering the bottom. I assume that this is dead algae. Could it be that there is just far too much algae in the pool for the chlorine to cope with? If so, perhaps best bet is to drain and refresh next spring...

Green pool - new pool owner

Can see bottom of bucket now. Water in it still a little murky, and there is definitely tiny grey matter towards the top. This tells me either: 1. 10g of shock will start to clear 4 litres in an hour or so; hence, by extrapolation, around 340 kg will do likewise in a 30k gallon pool! Clearly...

Green pool - new pool owner

Hi Teapot, Have done this, but not sure what it has proved. Can you clarify what you want, and what should happen? I took 4 litres of green water from the pool (it is very green now - visibility in the pool is little over 12 inches); to this I added a solution made from around a pint of...

Green pool - new pool owner

Don't appear to have lost much FC at all this morning, it is still at around 18. No improvement at all though in the pool; if anything, it is worse than it was a week ago. Completely illogical, isn't it? Only other thing to note is that the pH appears to have dropped off, down to around 6.8...

And your evening update is: 5pm - 10ppm FC - added 1.5kg of shock Also spent a long period backwashing/rinsing filter. Perhaps I have not been as meticulous here as I should have been. Think I am resigned to the fact that tomorrow morning will bring no improvement; I can but hope though.

Green pool - new pool owner

Wife tells me that we are down to 12ppm FC, so have asked her to add another 500g. Perhaps check mid-afternoon, and add another 500g, otherwise I will start the process of adding a further 1.5kg at around 6pm. If no sign of progress by tomorrow morning, I feel that it will be time to call it a...

Green pool - new pool owner

Just back from snother 6am start at the pool, and no visible progress. FC down to around 12ppm, so added another 500g of shock. I did in fact add an extra 500g at 11pm last night, before going to bed. So, 6kg of shock, and 36 hours in, with constant shock levels, and still getting nowhere.

Sorry, was away from pc. Thanks for replies. Yep, doing all this. Chlorine does seem to be holding. Will see if there is any improvement tomorrow. Latest reading (9pm): 15ppm, so hasn't lost much in the couple of hours since I last added shock. Think I will leave it at that for the day, and...

Very kind offer teapot, let's see how I get on over the next few days, and it might be worthwhile if I am still getting nowhere. Shock wasn't delivered until yesterday, so got started last night. Added 3kg of shock at 6pm, method was: - mix 500g at a time with 20 litres of water - pour very...
