    Newbie questions

Oops! I copied the wrong username when trying to attribute the first question. Sorry! Thanks for answering and splitting the thread. I might have to expand each of the questions into separate posts at some point if I start trying to figure out the chemistry. Concentrating on the question of...

    Newbie questions

Dumb newbie questions: - zea3: What did you use for floc? Reading on the net led me to buy aluminium sulphate from the garden center. - How does adding liquid bleach not add unwanted substances to the pool? Whether liquid or granulated, sodium or calcium, doesn't adding the right amount of...

Heat Pump Plumbing and Pressure Drop Questions

So I discovered that copying and pasting the IMG link text from photobucket was successful. Seems they just want to make sure that the link to photobucket is under the image. What I did was to get it working ASAP. The pool went green between the time I disconnected everything and finally got it...

Thanks kimkats. Any resource that gives rules of thumb and best practices for plumbing various pool components would be great.

A Hayward, looks just like the one pictured in this thread. Don't know the exact model off hand .

The ridiculous price of pool chemicals....

How insurmountable could it be to open and run an outlet that only held as much chemicals as a standard large pool store? And I guess to fully answer that I'd need input from someone who knows local regulations.

Andy @ Inyo Pools hooked me up!

How difficult a repair is that? I asked a local pool store about changing my gasket as there seems to be a persistent small leak to waste. Their suggestion was to put a ball valve on the waste port to block the leak. Because it was risky to take the valve apart and it would then cost the cost of...

Heat Pump Plumbing and Pressure Drop Questions

Hayward 1.5 hp pump, sand filter, RayPak 125k BTU heat pump. Disconnecting the input from the heat pump and directing it straight into the pool gives a filter pressure of 10 psi. Running the pump with the heat pump connected gives a pressure of 15psi. Previously, without the heat pump, the...

The ridiculous price of pool chemicals....

So, calcium hypoclorite is priced locally at $3/kg in 18 kg buckets. The store that sells at this price says it's the lowest price in town. Haven't found anything to disprove the claim. But how much does calcium hypoclorite cost wholesale? From a North American distributor, a 45kg pail is...

    Frustration... Green Pool of course.

Would chlorinating granules add CYA? Last year the chlorine from the granules seemed to simply disappear after a sunny day until I added stabiliser. http://www.trevi.com/p-2233-18kg-chlorine.aspx

    Frustration... Green Pool of course.

The kit is on this page. Although mine is branded as Olympic. Residential Pool and Spa Products in Canada - Taylor Technologies Previously, I was keeping the FC level at around 3 testing with that kit and it was staying crystal clear. I`ll try to get round to updating my signature.

    Frustration... Green Pool of course.

So, pool was sparking clean, but water temp 20deg C. Found a great deal on a heat pump, unplumbed everything to install, wrong fittings. End result? I can heat my pool up from 20deg C to 27 deg C overnight, but algae seems to have taken over. I'm guessing the first suggestion is going to be to...

    Union connections for RayPak heater

Resurecting an old thread to see if anyone can give me advice or confirm my findings. I have similar problem as the original poster. But with a heat pump and not a gas heater. Acquired a used RayPak R8350ti-E heat pump for a really good price (as long as it works). And in the rush with the...

Installing a new skimmer in existing in ground pool.

Have a look at my pool and you'll understand why I'll be happy to add something like that. Repair/Renovate or Remove? - Page 3 I found the PoolSkim and might order one to try on the deepend return. The deepend return is a foot or more out of the water. I'll be doing some jury-rigging to pipe...

Need new pump and my head is spinning!

Can't offer any advice for motor/pump choice, but I'll add my voice for general dissatisfaction with local pool store pricing. If you can install it yourself, buy online. I see no reason to buy from the local stores. Unless you're really worried about getting warranty service.

Installing a new skimmer in existing in ground pool.

If I'm seeing things right, the skimmer and the return are both "over the edge" PVC piping? Hate to be unhelpful, but do you know the brand of that skimmer? It might be just the thing to help resuscitate my pool.

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

Well, it sure looks a lot nicer all cleaned up. Need to check the chemical levels now. After fishing the latest batch of leaves out and disposing of the most recent floating squirrel, I suspect I've added enough clorine to dissolve the next squirrel that falls in. And I don't have a clue what...

    Overflow Coping?

Thanks Jamie. Negative edge seems to be used when there's a visible drop-off. Plenty of hits for products searching for overflow coping: overflow coping - Google-Suche What I'm hoping is that someone on here might have a good set of pointers on where to being.

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

You answered your own question. A time delay circuit will account for pump start-up time or pump speed changes. A start-up time delay could make sure that the water is flowing before closing the compressor contactor and deciding whether to power the valve to heat water or leave it unpowered and...

    Overflow Coping?

First I need to learn the right terminology. Then I'm wondering what resources and design considerations are required. And finally of course is costs. You can see my pool in my other thread, a large lazy L. So there are three edges to the shallow end and three edges to the deep end. I have...

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

No the pool most definately popped. Current owners knew the original owners of the house. That owner is the one that paid to put the pool in and the one that left it empty. Seemingly cost them thousands to stabilize the pool and make it functional again. It was then used for years as-is until...

chinatti, If only it was two inched out of level. :p High point in the far back right of the deep end is ~23 inches higher than the lowest point closest left of the shallow end. Can't fix that with a little spackle. ;) One of the ideas that I'm mulling moving forward with is the idea of...

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

The start: Coping before: Coping after: Cleaning the pool (I'm 6' tall, the pool is indeed quite big): "Finished" (translation, it's been two days, it's getting late, I'm sore, there's still the street to clean, and I can't believe the neighbours haven't made a noise complaint about the...

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

Some neat ideas Keith. But, I don't like the idea of cutting the pool. The exterior structure is metal panels with bracing. Cutting level would involve cutting the bracing as well. Really need to find someone in the cement business who knows what structural possibilities there are. On the...

Let's see, At least two different shades of blue, a green or two, and another shade I'd have to go out to check if there was any left. The pressure washer wasn't enough. When it comes time to repaint properly (if not replastering or some alternative) I'll need to have a go with my grinder and...

Hotspot FPH AC heat reclamation pool heater - a review!

Glad your high-pressure safety cutout is working. Had this idea: a lower setting pressure switch could switch the system back to air cooled. A flow switch in the water piping could also keep the air condenser in the circuit and run the condenser fan. With either of these approaches, if the...

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

Yes Helen, I'm going to stop by the pool supply store today and see what they have in the way of hydrostatic valves. Install it and fill. I saw exactly what I'd like to have built in one of the local pool company's showrooms. One day, if I win the lottery...

    Repair/Renovate or Remove?

Well, for anyone that was following this and cares for an update: Summer was busy and I did nothing with the pool until two weeks ago. With good weather forecast, I rented an electric pump and a gas powered 4000psi pressure washer. Over two days I pumped out and pressure washed the entire...
