    CYA test help

My CYA tests have been reliably measuring around 50 all summer. Today I tested it and the dot is gone even prior to hitting the 100 mark. I haven't added anything but bleach and acid since the last test so I know my level isn't that high. I'm wondering now that the water temp is down in the...

    Pump pressure increasing rapidly

Had a similar issue with my cartridge filter last year. Someone suggested, like Duraleigh, that it might be dead algae and that if I raised my FC to the 8-10 range and held it there for a while, it might help. I was skeptical since the water looked clear but I tried it anyway... that did the...

    Preparing for heavy rains

So with the prospect of Alex coming ashore in SE Texas, I'm looking at the possibility of 12 inches of rain. Typically, when I get one of these heavy rains, the pool turns brown / green and I have to run my pump for about 3 straight days to clear things up. I've always suspected it to be...

    Filter pressure low

My filter pressure had gone from about 10 to 20 PSI so over the weekend, I cleaned the filter and gave it a bath in TSP. I reassembled it yesterday morning and the pressure was down to about 10 again. I closed down the valve to the wall returns about half way to direct more flow to the in...

    Requirements for Solar

I'd like to put in Solar heating sometime and think I have the roof space for it, but the back side of my house is the north side. So you really need the panels facing south for them to work well?

New Pool - If you had to do it over again ... ?

Pool decking... as they were laying out our pool, we reworked the amount of decking we wanted... it was something like $8 / sq foot and it would cost a lot more to do it later. We wound up adding several hundred sq feet of decking and are really glad we did.. plenty of room for patio tables...

For those that switched to a SWG

Our pool builder put in a pool for a friend with a SWG about 5 years ago. By the time they built mine about 3 years ago, they were seriously steering people away from them, but would install one for about $1200 extra. Now they won't even put one in even if you beg them (and they have given up...

Intentionally running at higher filter pressure

When I clean my filter, it generally will drop to a pressure of about 10PSI with all of the valves wide open. On the output side, I have a valve for the wall returns, a valve for the in-floor jets (that point toward my main drain) and a pipe with no valve for the in-floor cleaning system pop...

    Lost my CYA mixing bottle

Mine that came with the Taylor kit takes 7ml+7ml... I suppose it depends on the size of the tube you use to read the results. The instructions would call for enought to fill it to the maximum reading (in my case about 12ml). Of course if you know you're down around 40-60ppm, you could use less.

    Tf test kit question

I called and asked them that a couple of weeks ago and apparently it's just a quirk in the prices they get from their vendors if I understand correctly. The lady said some people still prefer the smaller bottles because they fit in the test kits better... I ordered the 8oz.

Thinking of switching to a SWG

How handy would I have to be to install one of these myself? ... or is it better left to a pro?

Looking for the pictures of green to clean

Someone had posted a thread a while back with pictures of how they cleared up their green pool over the course of several days. I'd like to find that to send to a friend as a testimonial, but can't find the thread. Does anyone have the link?

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter I'm thinking that instead of the trash can soaking my filters in the cartridge unit itself. I figure I can put rags in the inlet/outlet pipes, unscrew the covering on top where the pressure gauge is and fill it up to soak. I'm sure a small amount of TSP...

    When to replace cartridges?

I have a sta-rite system 3 as well and just wanted to make a couple of comments on the thread: 1) Other problems could result in quickly rising pressures as well. Last year when I had this problem, someone suggested that I might be on the verge of an algae outbreak (algae growing and being...

How to keep the pole from collapsing

hmm.. this might work. I have a little hand truck with an adjustable handle and two pins that push through a hole and have a curved part grabs the outside of the pole to let the pin click in place (hard to describe, but if you've seen them, you'll know what I'm talking about. I think the...

    Recovering from a heavy rain

Yeah.. your picture and experiences very similar to what I had although mine wasn't near as bad. Last year after the hurricane, it took about a week to clear up, but I was having to clean the filter 4 times / day for the first two days and then ramped down during the week.. all in all, about...

How to keep the pole from collapsing

I've had my poool about 1.5 years now and theres something that's been bugging me that maybe someone else has solved. When I go to brush the pool I have a hard time keeping it extended. However much I crank down the sleeve to tighten the poll, it just doesn't seem to grab well enough. My...

    Recovering from a heavy rain

Perhaps next time I know we have one of these big 3+" rains coming, I'll raise my FC to shock level (so that when the pool overflows and I lose some water, the FC stays above the recommended levels) to see if that prevents the issue. It might at least save me the filter cleaning that comes when...

    Recovering from a heavy rain

Polyvue, No SWG.. just chlorine.. I'm usually shooting for about 75 in the summer here in Houston, but probably don't need it quite that high in the winter. Dave, I did add enough bleach to raise my FC to about 10 just as a precaution but just running the filter for about 3 days cleared it...

    Recovering from a heavy rain

So we got about 5 inches of rain last week and it overflowed the pool and turned the water bright green (it does that every time we get heavy rains.. not sure why, I don't think it's algae because my chlorine usage doesn't increase... I guess it's gunk getting washed off of the leaves from the...

Polyquat 60 vs "No More Problems" (Sodium Bromide)

Scott, Thanks for taking time to respond... as I allude to, I was always impressed with the people I talked to at your company. I think where I got into trouble was that I really didn't understand the conversion of Sodium Bromide to Bromine and the fact that it stays in the pool. As a...

    dumb question

Based on the last description, 66 feet sounds right. When assembled your pool should be about 22 feet across. Matt was assuming you meant your pool was 33 feet across.

    tf 100 test cylinder

I don't want to insult anyone, but is it possible that the vials that are a different size / shape / material would have a meniscus of differing sizes and that the error is in not taking that into account? After a lot of squinting I've decided to that to get 10 Ml in my "chlorine only" tube, I...

    BBB In the winter (Texas)

OK.. probably 3-4 months of swim season left, but I'm wondering... I think my pool manufacturer said that algae won't grow once water is below 57 degrees. As the water temperature drops, should I reduce my target FC levels based on the water temperature? I don't generally close the pool or...

    Mosquito control

When I had the sprinkler re-connected after the pool build, he installed a chlorinator in the sprinkler system. I put either cedar extract (cedarcide) or garlic extract in and run the sprinkler system for about 2 minutes / zone. Seems to work well. Most of the time, the chlorinator stays...

Why filter pressure suddenly went up?

When my cartridge filter started climbing by about 15PSI in a week, I posted a similar question... what-s-clogging-my-cartridge-filter-t15069.html The answer I was given was that perhaps algae was clogging it. I was skeptical at first because the water was clear, but I bumped up my chlorine...

CYA test ~~ Trouble with view tube DOT .....

I wish they had a picture 1 drop before the test was complete! I guess that might not show too well on a photograph.. Polyquat 60 vs "No More Problems" (Sodium Bromide)

    ? concerning in-floor cleaning systems

I guess this is a bit of an old thread, but I'll respond anyway. I adjust mine depending on what's going on. If a storm drops a lot of floating leaves in it, the I'll open the skimmer valves wide open and close up the main drain. If I have a lot of gunk in the bottom, I do the opposite (I...
