Ozone is a nice option to have

Missed a question. I have generally used algae control as the measure of my success, until this year. With the DE filter, all the stuff running, and the high water temps, this is the first time we may have run into a bacterial issue for a few days. Adding some of the calcium hypochlorite...

Ozone is a nice option to have

First, I'm surprised no one picked up on the cost of the ozonator, and the payback time. Curious. Chem Geek. The pool may have had some bromine in it. No way for me to tell. My first year I did a terrible job of testing, using only an AquaChem kit that tested chlorine and pH. I also was...

Ozone is a nice option to have

I have been using an Eclipse Ozonator on my pool for 3 years now. IT DOES HELP!!! and anyone who tells me it doesn't or can't doesn't really know. BUT, IT IS VERY COSTLY "help" I have a very high demand outdoor pool because it gets a lot of debris in it regularly, which I have explained...

    Pool Start up Problems

"Need more input" How long have you been managing a/this pool? Did you do the winterization last year? If so what did you do? What is the plumbing like? What kind of valves?

    vaccuming pool (inground)

Yes. Definitely. 1) Big stuff vacuumed up could cause problems with the pump. 2) Big stuff vacuumed up could get caught in the underground plumbing -- you have an in-ground pool, right? Stuff stuck in underground plumbing could get really expensive trying to get unstuck. So, as a safety...

    Aeration does what?

Not big, just lots of them. My plumbing is rather old, and submerged. There is no practical way to change the pool plumbing without incurring seriously big 5-figure costs and ruining our backyard. So, the ozonater is connected to a special venturi "mixer". There is a valve in the main line...

    Next ?? Silver Ions

I just read a bunch of stuff on Wikipedia about algae, and cyanobacteria, while waiting for a process to run. Lots of confusing terminology. And eesh, yuck, slimey, blech, So the reason to keep algae or any growths low, is to keep the water as safe and non-toxic for humans...

Water level for built in skimmers.

Here's a dumb question. I have an in ground pool. On the side is a "skimmer" The water level can be below the skimmer level, where it obviously doesn't work, and it can be above the skimmer level = ditto. But the opening is about 4 or 6 inches high. If the water level is on the high side...

So silver ions are supposed to act as an anti-microbial agent right? How? and why is it considered to be too slow? I'm not talking algae here, so please don't comment on plant life. Let's stay with bacteria and viruses.

    Calling WB + CG -- Redox ??

Ok, so Ozone is a better oxidizer than chlorine = hypochloric acid. But the marketing number, while technically correct from one perspective, is mis-leading in fully understanding its effectiveness. I understand that the Ozone leaves the water too quickly to be an effective replacement for...

    Monopersulfate question.

But, it did have one advantage over liquid chlorine, in one case for me. It eliminated the black algae from my steps. I was able to dump a pretty heavy concentration on the steps, and let it disolve somewhat slowly. Bleach dispersed too quickly to be effective, without raising the level in...

    Are Borates Safe to Use?

The good news for humans is that since we have kidneys and liquid/water based excretion system we are able to rid ourselves of the boron that hasn't be used in our skeletal stuctures, besides also having a fairly substantial mass and billions more cells. But, I would guess that injesting pool...

    Best type of cleaner?

The shape of your pool would work against you for an automatic robotic solution. If you wanted to go robotic, then it should be a remote control unit so that you can be sure it navigates all over the place. The most cost effective one would be the Blue Diamond model. The main advantage of a...

Roll call: What cleaner do you use? Are you happy with it?

Aquabot Turbo T2. Replaced an Aquabot Turbo that broke for the last time. I am very happy with it. It cleans much better than the old one. It spends more time on the floor and walls and less time on the rim than the old one. It gets itself unstuck from the stairs I think its underside "turbo...

    Anyone dump their Robot?

When I bought my house I inherited an old Aquabot Turbo. It worked fairly well. But, it spent too much time on the rim, would get stuck on the steps, and twice got caught on the main drain. I repaired the power supply twice. I repared the main unit 3 times. This year, the side wall broke...

    Calling WB + CG -- Redox ??

The point is that what I had read/found before agrees with the numbers Chem Geek reported, 2.0 for Ozone and for chlorine I had remembered maybe 1.7ish but it could have been 1.6. So, that being that, why was WB using the numbers he was using? Where did they come from? Why do his numbers...

    Monopersulfate question.

Do the sulfates stay in the water until removed by waste/draining and backwashing? Or do they combine with other stuff which can be filtered out? Or do they eventually gas out? Will they impart a "smell" -- like sulphur dioxide? Since I have a fairly strong ozonator, will that oxidize the...

    Calling WB + CG -- Redox ??

You can't use the same oxidation potential for ozone as for oxygen. http://www.rsbs.anu.edu.au/O2/O2_1_Redox.htm O2 holds together more tightly than the three atoms in O3. If Ozone had a weaker oxidation potential than chlorine, then it wouldn't be able to oxidize chloramines, re-releasing...

    Calling WB + CG -- Redox ??

WaterBear made this statement in a posting I just read I remember reading elsewhere, multiple times, that the Redox "value" for Ozone was 2.0, not 1.24. So, what's the deal?

    New "Dumb" Pool Owner

Hey there, welcome to this place. Glad you found and plugged some leaks. I would recommend a robotic cleaner. Even though I spent a pretty penny for mine (> $1000), keeping the bottom of the pool clean with it is a breeze. I just through it in, turn it on, take it out, clean the bag...

    Aeration does what?

I had an aquarium for a number of years. I have an idea of how light affects algae growth. Also, it is blantantly obvious that keeping the pool dark would retard algae growth and be impractical. That's why I took that as an offhand sarcastic remark.

    Aeration does what?

Phosphates also act as a fertilizer for algae, so that's a bust. In the interest of staying on topic, I guess I should abandon this line of questioning. Why aeration has been answered adequately. Thanks guys :goodjob: 8)
